We drove from Rotorua to Taupo and on the way went to Wai-o-taupo thermal wonderland where we saw a geyser erupt, lots of bubbling mud pools, steaming ground, a steaming bubbling lake called the champagne pool and a bright yellow sulphor lake. We then had a walk to Huka falls which was the fastest flowing water we e ever seen, no one is allowed to White water raft on that! It was really pretty.
When we arrived at Lake Taupo we had a stroll around town looking for food, we had enough of Nz pies but were so hungry we settled on pizza hut which was so cheap compared to home and the first thing we saw. Then we swam in the heated pool jumped on the jumping pillow which is the biggest in NZ and adults are actually allowed on it! Then ate rump steaks which cost us $8 for two 17oz steaks (about 4pounds!) which Ash cooked in the van due to torrential rain and hail storms which went on all night!
The next day we had a spend free day visiting the Volcanic Activity Centre which was very cheesy and quite unnerving when we read learned about all the destructive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that go on all the time all over NZ, Becky picked up a brochure telling you what to do in a natural disaster(stay in the van for shelter) and we sat in a booth that replicated a real earthquake! Then we went to watch a dam letting water out which they get electricity from which was pretty cool for free they have a clock that counts down to the water release and the water fills up a whole gorge in minutes which is a unique thing to watch. Then we strolled around town had an amazing curry for lunch and saw the very big very pretty lake Taupo, the biggest lake in australasia.
