After catching up on the sleep from our flights we headed south to see what the big island is famous for. We downloaded the "Shaka" app which gives you a tour pointing out the sights. After cruising down the west coast we went to South Point. This is the southern most point of Hawaii and also the most southern point of America, 2 sights for the price of one. Here there are cliffs which is a local cliff jump spot. About a 10m drop which probably isn't that bad, but the 10m climb up a rusty ladder looked like the hardest work. No we didn't jump. We then went to see if the road to the green sand beach was upgraded, this was not the case and we decided to not pay locals for the ride. Another time. On our way to the Volcano National Park we stopped in for lunch at a bakery and Tilds had a jumbo hot dog. To our surprise it was only 10cm long. Starting to think jumbo in America means different to Oz. We got to Black Sands beach, unsurprisingly it has black sand. It also has regular visits from Green Sea Turtles and we where lucky enough to see 4 chilling on the sand. Just as we were leaving a fifth turtle emerged from the water - it was amazing! After some snaps we went volcano hunting. After the customary family photo at the park entrance we went to see some action. Kilauea has gone quiet and there is no active lava flows at the moment. As disappointing as this was it was also a good thing too. We saw the crater, some steam vents, suplhur banks and as you may guess lots of lava flows from previous eruptions. As tempting as it was to take a sample for my rock collection, it is against the law and bad luck so I took lots of photos. If I am lucky someone might buy me some as a christmas gift? We followed the lava to the sea and saw an arch which is slowly being eroded away by the waves. There are also tree moulds which are made by lava forming around a tree which doesn't immediately burn away. After the volcano overload we headed back to Kona through Hilo and over the Mauna Kea pass which goes between 2 other craters in the middle of the island. The highest point is 2022m above sea level. We got back into Kona after dark, and with the girls straight to bed it was time for a Kona Brewing Company lager. Penny had the Pale Ale. Perfect way to end the day watching USA's version of who wants to be a carol singer. Not quite sure what it was called, but it was a reality show judging carol singers. Good thing there are 74 other channels to choose from. Aloha for now, (this is used to say hi and bye).
