Dear frenchies, you have made your point. You can build a castle/ church/ chateau on a bloody cliff. Well done.
Seriously, around every corner in this part of France is a cliff that most people wouldn't stand on , let alone build a 3 million tonne castle on!
The town we are staying has one, 3 km down the river has two, rocomadour is a short drive away, and b***** me, on the drive back from rocomadour we stop for wine, look up and there is a chateau on a cliff that doesn't even get a signpost they are so blasé about it.
I imagine being a stonemason in the 12th century must have been a dangerous time, and let alone if in the hundred years war, a neighboring noble liked the look of your castle, attacked and took it over before you got paid!...
We have also finally become accustomed to the fact that the French shut everything from 12-2 and have lunch and enjoy themselves. Everything is closed, petrol stations, shops, supermarkets. (restaurants stay open)
We pulled up a a deserted picnic ground at 12 for lunch, by 12.15 there were 20 people there drinking wine , topless sunbaking, picnicking....... Wouldn't it be great!, you get to go home for lunch while the kids are still at school, go for a run and go back to work for 2 (school doesn't finish till 5pm here).
I propose we do it in Australia.

ourhouseinquercy Go for a run? That's not very French...
Maryanne You don't all sunbake topless between 12 and 2 in mount Martha?? Must just be Surrey Hills where that happens
