We woke up early this morning to get ready for our free walking your. Shivani had the best shower of her trip and then we went had breakfast which was good too, save the coffee.
We then packed our stuff and dumped our bags in the luggage store. We then headed to the main square where we waited for the tour guide. After finding him we set of on the tour that started downtown, covering the important cultural and political buildings. The guide gave good history about Chile's recent turbulent past and also about some interesting things about Santiago like nuts 4 nuts and coffee with legs.
We then carried on towards the Bellavista neighbourhood which was the student area and quite cheap. The guide informed us of some things to try and ended the tour at Pablo Neruda house. We then left the guide and went to a Chilean restaurant he recommended. I had the corn pie and Shivani the bean stew. Both were really good if not heavy for a hot day.
We then went up the San Cristobal hill where we had some great views of the city. We came back down and went to a bar to try the earthquake cocktail, which was a pint of half wine, half pisco and a scoop of pineapple ice cream. I can't say that it was very nice but I drank it anyway.
We then headed over to one of the original ice cream parlours of Santiago. After trying a lot of different flavours we sat and had a couple of scoops. The ice cream was pretty good and went down well on such a hot day.
We then went to our last stop of the day to get a coffee with legs. After searching around for a bit we found a place and went in for a coffee. The girls were dressed in Santa outfits and our waitress tried to make conversation with us although she couldn't speak English.
It was now pretty late and we had felt we had now had a good experience of Santiago. It was quite a nice city, would probably be a nice place to go out and would be good if you were into art.
We headed back to our hostel after chilling in Plaza de Armas for a bit, which was very lively with performing artists, tarot readers, chess players and a Christmas grotto for kids.
After chilling in the hostal for a bit and sorting out our stuff we took a taxi to the bus station. We took a ticket with a company recommended on trip advisor and had an hour to wait for the bus. We decided to spend the last of our Chilean Pesos and Shivani headed off to buy stuff, while I looked after the bags. She came back with some McDonald's and had found that they did a big mac with chicken. She got that for me and meatless one for herself. It was delicious!! And something that should be in the UK too.
After that we boarded the bus and took our seats. It was not as good as I expected and things were worse when we started moving as the was a big rattling noise and they played Toy Story 3 really loud in Spanish. We both didn't manage to get much sleep that night expect for the couple of hours we spent at the border. Being awake I did notice the scenery which I think would have been spectacular during the day as we drove right up through the mountains.
