Woke up early in order to get to the Alhambra before the real heat of day kicked in. Left with Bridget, the boys and a couple of others and walked to the bus stop, was very grateful for bus as up another blummin hill! Got our reserved tickets, much shorter queue and bought an audio guide. (highly recommended, really informative) Armed with map and guide set off down the Cypress Walk to discover the Alhambra... what a place. Walked through the Medina area and past some ruins. Gardens pretty good in that part as well. Followed the way of the audio guide and went to the Alcazaba area, the miltary bit. Had a good explore and climbed the watch tower, great view over surrounding area and Granada. Went to the museum but didn't find it enthralling to say the least. Came back out of there and waited for my time to go into the Palacios Nazaries. When inside was amazed by all of it, such decorative tiles every where and incredible arches and details. The use of water was great as well, lots of buildings reflecting on it. Really like the style in here and must have been amazing when in use. The famous lion patio was good with lots of slender columns (see image) fountain has lions surrounding it hence name. Went through room upon room of fantastic architecture and decoration, never seen anything like it. Left the palaces and went to the Partal area. Great garden area and again use of water all over the place. Found the Generalife gardens in some ways the best bit tho. great location over looking the rest of Alhambra and great flowers and trees. By this point had taken so many photos that camera battery had died and was gutted. Made use of the semi decent one on my phone tho and hope for the best. The best of the roses were over but had some other beautiful beds of flowers. My favourite was a wildflowerish one, purple, blue, cream and pinks. Stood for a while and simply admired it and took in the scents. Continued through to various patios again with water features and plants until found myself at the exit. An amazing, unforgettable place. Went to head for the bus but due to big cycle race (Tour de Spain or something) it had moved. Watched bikes for a while an pitied them on the hill. I'm sure they are slightly fitter than me tho so managed much better. Found the bus and headed back to town. Got some lunch and meandered back to the hotel, charged battery and had a little siesta. Got up about 4 30 and headed to the internet, had also managed to fill the memory card. Came back and headed out to dinner with the boys and Bridget. Found the cathedral, very nice but didn't go in. Headed up to the Mirador in Albayzin (old town) to watch the sunset (or so we thought) got to the top to find that the viewpoint looked over the Alhambra. An amazing view but not where the sunset was. Had a bibble around the top and couldn't find it so headed back down the hill. The boys wanted Indian again but Bridget and I went to a great restaurant in a square. Got so many veggies, so excited! (never thought I'd say that!) washed all down with best sangria so far. Ended up at the internet again after dinner to load some photos on. back to the hostel about 1.
