The Mookie World Tour
We arrived in Buenos Aires in Tuesday after a mammoth 16 hour trip from Heathrow. Jo somehow managed to get quite a lot of sleep on the plane but we were still both knackered when we arrived at the awesomely named Milhouse Hostel so we had a few hours kip before our first excursion into the surrounding area.
First impressions: the roads are mental. There are often 8 or 9 lanes in each direction and the speed limit is high! In the evening we had a couple of beers in the hostel bar and then had a tango lesson (!). As I'm sure you're all aware this isn't really my thing but I had a bloody good time and we learnt a couple of basic steps, which we had to perform in front of everyone at the end. Jules - you would have been proud.
Milhouse Hostel is far better than those I've experienced in Europe. They arrange walking tours in the daytime and entertainment in the evenings rather than just a bed! In the last two days we've done tours of Ricoletta (the more up-market part of the city) and San Telmo (the old town).
In Ricoletta we visited the cemetery where Evita is buried under 8 metres of concrete. It's so deep because the body was taken to Milan and they don't want it to get pinched again. Our guide Stefi told us about the love/hate feelings Argentinians have about Evita. The cemetery she is buried mainly contains wealthy people, and as Evita was part of a poor family as a child, the rich don't like the fact she is buried in that cemetery. Whereas the poor love the way she tried to help them and spread awareness of their struggles. There were a few monuments to Evita around the place. One of these was particularly ugly, and it was quite apt that a pigeon had crapped on Evita's head.
Today we visited San Telmo and I got crapped on by a pigeon. Probably served me right for the Evita monument thing. Anyway we walked down some narrow cobbled streets and Stefi showed us some important buildings - typical sightseeing stuff!
The food is absolutely incredible and ridiculously cheap. I've had steak every day and it's 1.50 pounds for a huge sirloin steak. Jo had one today which was almost has big as her. Last night we were given wine before our meal, we had a bottle with the meal and champagne afterwards. Total cost of meal: 12 quid. Awesome.
We've mainly met Aussies so far. They're great fun and happy to help us with our Australian trip. We're meeting a couple in half an hours time so they can annotate our Lonely Planet guide with all the places we need to go over a Quilmes beer.
Tomorrow we're off to Iguazu Falls in the north-east of Argentina for a few days - a trip organised by the Travel Agency in the hostel. We'll be back in Buenos Aires on Tuesday for a few more days before heading somewhere else in the country; perhaps Mendoza, in the wine region.
Hope all is well in England
