From sunrise to sunset, it was a glorious day. Early morning activity started with the adjacent floating fisherman's home before breakfast. The morning was spent kayaking while the big Dragon Pearl cruised to our new location, visiting a few caves, abd having some respite on the beach (my kayak was the only one that unbeached itself and took off on its own). In the brush behind the beach, there was a small shrine next to three graves from fisherman who had died.
The boat's water taxi toook us back to the boat. After lunch we were greeted by women from Cong Dam fishing village in bamboo boats who took us back to their village. Indochina Junks is helping to support this village by bringing in tourism and money as well as helping to clean up the environment around the village. A generator was provided about two years ago bringing electricity to the village for the first time. While it is on only for two hours a day, the village now has satellite TV and a way to know about the outside world. There is a small fish farm in the village. Indochina Junks is also working with the villagers to plant mangroves at the shore.
The village has about 200 people. We visited the school - teacher comes regularly, and there are two classes, one for the 5-7 year olds and one for the 7-9 year olds. A nurse does visit the village, but there is no other access to health care. If there is a serious problem or emergency, the army can be contacted and can send a high speed power boat to transport the person to Halong City. Marriage only occurs with people from other fishing villages.
