Little Mick's Hunny Harem Extravanganza
Hi all,
I've decided to try and keep postcards shorter by writing about individual days or events that are happening on my travels. The first of these since my last update will have to be the Winery tour and Freo prison tour.
I went to the prison on Friday night and got the torch tour which was failry good - well it made me jump once or twice. They would have staff dressed up as prisoners walk out of cells and pretend to be mad etc. You'd also get inmates jumping from the top floor only to be saved by the safety netting, but it was a good tour and was well worth doing. You could also do a search by surnames to see if any relatives were shipped out here. Of course us O'Connor's have always come from good families so none of us were there, but there was a J Flynn and a Henry if I recall correctly!!! Not too sure what they were in for, but they could probably do with another stretch today!
The next morning I was up at 8 and headed into Perth on the train. I was then collected by the tour bus driver Rory and met James, Lindsay, another Lindsay and her friend Lucy. The five of us headed of towards the first winery and all got chatting. James and Lindsay were staying at Pirates also and were training to be doctors. They were in Freo for five weeks to get some experience in the hospitals over here. The other two girls were travelling for a while and had a car that they were heading north in.
The first winery there was a woman explaining the different wines and how to taste wine. She was originally from Meath, but had been over here for 10 years or so. Her accent was very mixed up it would change between Irish and Australian all the time. She had been on a bender the night before by the looks of things and so was happy to get the hair of the dog.
Of course when tasting wine you are supposed to spit into a bucket, but that wasn't the plan her and the guzzling began. We had 6 or 7 different wines and a lovely selection of cheeses. After that we headed to our next winery which was about a half hour drive. The next winery we were told would be good craic as we could help our selves if we particularly liked a certain wine (so we did). You could tell that the wine was having the desired affect as we were all chatting a lot more and now the cameras were out taking pictures (soon to follow).
After an hour or so we went to the swan river for lunch and rory cooked on the bbq. He also had another box of wine for lunch, so there was no stopping us! Once lunch was done it was onto the third winey to give us an insight into where the yuppies would go to tatse wine. I've spilt more at the bar than we got to tatse but then again that's not saying much as I have probably spilt tonnes in my time! We didn't delay their too long and headeed onto our 4th and final winery. this was a family owned winery that had been handed down through several generations. The woman serving us was married to the owner and was really friendly. By the bar there were lots of framed pictures taken by a local artist and one in particular that really stood out to all of us in the group. Its difficult to explain but it was of raindrops on a spiders web, with one particular raindrop reflecting a winery. It was beautiful so I had to buy it - oh and a bottle of wine (as if I hadn't had enough). The only problem now was to send the picture home - It should be on its way Mum. As for the bottle of wine it stayed unopen for a week or so, but I'll let you know where that was consumed later.
We left the winery and headed to a choclate factory to get some choclate tasting done, but I'm not into the sweet stuff (I'm sweet enough) so I only tried a small bit. We quickly headed back to Perth to have a few in the Northbridge area. It was now 6 in the evening and we were all pretty merry. Rory had a few in the bar with us and then headed off, but the rest of us stayed together for another few jugs of beer. Myself Lindsay and James then headed to Rosie O'Grady's for a beer before deciding to head back to Freo. It was around 10ish when we got back to the hostel and I was supposed to be meeting Amy, but she didn't make it as far as Freo. I think a session at the uni kept her there! That was grand as I was back at the hostel tearing into a bottle of vodka with James. I hadn't been sure all day which part of Scotland they were from but after a few beers found out that James was a celt so that was cool!
Rory and the company (the name of which eludes me maybe skytours) was quality and great value for money. Its a business he and his brother got going about two years ago so they are both still doing the tours and he was great craic any way. If you go to Perth its a must!
I'll continue with the adventures of Freo in a min.
Mick
