Little Mick's Hunny Harem Extravanganza
Hi all,
Well I am now in Waiorou at Ed and Janet's, but I have almost a week of travels to update you on first.
Last Friday I went off to do the Nevis Highwire bungee jump and I can easily say it was the scariest thing I have ever done in my life. Why any one in their right mind would put them selves through such a frightening thing is beyond me, but then again once you do it, it is well worth it. I checked in to do the jump at 1:30 and didn't get back from the jump until 5:30, so there was a lot of waiting around. This is not a good thing as you are watching others do their jump and just getting more and more nervous. Stepping out to the edge was so firghtening and I know you shouldn't look down but when you get to the edge it isn't that easy. 440ft drop or 134 meters - which ever way you say it it's a long way down. For a split second I thought I wouldn't be able to do it, but then just jumped. I was falling for what seemed like ages, but is only around 10 seconds freefall. The ground is coming towards you pretty fast then the bungee kicks in.
As I am typing this Sooty (Jim), Brian Fell and Seasmus King should be getting ready for the jump. I had scared the life out of them on Sunday telling them about it, so I can only imagine what Seamus is thinking right now. Best of luck lads.
I had a quite night after the bungee as I had to be up early Saturday morning to get to Christchurch. Thursday night we (Martin, John and others staying at the Pinewood hostel) had gone out on a major session. One of the girls out with us (Avril) was from Castleisland - do you recognise her Katie and Joanna? She knew your pub!. I headed home around 3:30 and left Martin at a bar. At some stage he managed to lose his wallet which was a pain for him, but hopefully the bank have sent his cards to him now and all is ok again. Martin has managed to get a couple of jobs in queenstown which is good going considering he was only in town two days. Most other people are struggling to find work and accommodation, so those of you that know Martin will be glad to hear he's doing well. Drinking like a fish also, but I'm sure he'll blame that on meeting me. We had a good few sessions and had a drink for ye all from Trek America.
The bus left Queenstown at 7:30 Saturday morning in the middle of a blizzard and was struggling to make it out of the town, so our driver decided to head for Dunedin. This meant that we wouldn't reach Christchurch until 7 and the match was starting at 7:10. Myself and 8 others decided to hire two cars in Dunedin and drive ourselves to Christchurch as we would get their quicker in the cars than the bus. Sure enough we got to Christchurch around 6ish. Whilst on the bus to Dunedin the bus driver (Cam) gave me a phone number of a friend of his who had tickets for the match that night. I managed to arrange for a ticket for myself, but needed to collect it. I gave Jim (sooty) a buzz and he went and met your man in Christchurch and paid for the ticket. Thank you Jim, I still owe you a few beers back in Morgan's for that!
I met Jim, Brian and Seamus outside the ground and got my ticket for the game. We arranged to meet in the Twisted Hop after the match and Seamus' friend Cam had put all our names on the door, so we would have no trouble getting in! Quality. We all met up and started celebrating like the lions had won! All of the kiwi's were good craic and didn't give us too much stick over the lions being hammered. We left the twisted hop to go else where, but every where was packed and had queues a mile long to get in, so we headed back to the twisted hop. The beer was pretty piss poor in their, but that didn't stop us dinking it. We got back to Cam's place at around 3 in the morning and tried to watch my bungee jump on the TV, but for some reason it wouldn't work. Perhaps we were too drunk to operate it?
The next morning Sooty and Seamus had planned to go swimming with dolphins, so they left in one campervan and myself and Brian followed them in the other campervan. We drove over a small hill (as the locals would call it, but it was a mountain) and got to the small town, but the dolphin swimming ws cancelled as the weather was too bad. For some reason I don't think the lads were too upset with the idea of not having to jump into the freezing sea!! We headed off for breakfast and got a good fry up in a local cafe!
Next we went back into Christchurch and drove to the hostel where the lads from Limerick were staying. The Limerick lads had shared the car with me from Dunedin and I had left my rucksack in the boot over night. You'd think I'd have learnt my lesson after the English girls in queenstown, but no - I'm still leaving my bags anywhere with any one. These lads were sound though and had looked after my stuff.
After that we headed up a Gondola to overlook the city. Seamus was not the most comfortable going up in the Gondola and I tried to explain to him that sitting in a Gondola going up 900ft was alot easier than jumping 440ft! The views were amazing, but it was freezing cold up their. Whilst up there we could see the cruise boat that the Lions supporter were staying in and Sooty commented that he would much rather travel in a campervan. One of the guys who was staying in the boat happened to overhear him and siad that it would be far to cold travelling in a campervan! Snob.
Talking of campervans, you'll see a picture of the roof of the guys campervans. On top of it was a window that you could open up. Brian was driving one day before I met the guys and there was a height restriction ahead of them. Seamus could see that Brian was going to hit the top of the van, but rather than tell him thought it would be funnier to let him hit it. Now sooty and Brian have the wind and cold blowing into their van every night. I'm sure the towel covering the whole is doing a good job keeping the cold out in queenstown!
We got back to Cam's house that evening freshened up and then headed out for a drink and dinner. The lads decided to head home at closing time (around 11ish) but myself and Brian had other plans. We got a taxi back into town to go this pub that was showing the munster final. Unfortunatly it wasn't showing the match live, but at 12:30 Monday lunchtime - bummer. We still stayed out for a few more hours before heading back to the hostel.
As fun as it is travelling around the world it was good to meet Sooty, Seamus and Brian and see some familar faces. It was also great to have a house to stay in in Christchurch - so Thanks again Cam & Sam for putting us up!
