Megsy on the go...
Well - here it is - my final postcard for my overseas jaunt (sob sob..).
But what better place to send it from - Egypt - the land of ancient secrets, sun and sand. Such an amazing place with so much to see and do.
Am currently on the east coast of the Sinai Peninsula at Dahab, which is a bit of a resort town, but lovely nonetheless. Our hotel is on the waterfront and we can see all the way to Saudi Arabia (only 20kms away apparently across the sea!). Have three days here just chilling out and catching up on sleep as we had a 2am start this morning to catch a ferry and a 4.30am start the day before. I think the plan tomorrow is to do a day of snorkelling on some of the reefs which sounds like loads of fun. From here we have a long climb (3hours) to the top of Mt Sinai for what should be a sensational sunset, and then back to Cairo on 26 November.
Started the tour with some free time in Cairo - what a crazy city! For starters they apparently have road rules according to the road signs, road markings and traffic lights ...however I think someone forgot to point these small things out to the drivers. Everything is signalled through a series of horn beeps, well thats what I can gather!! Us girls are getting plenty of attention from the Egyptian men - seems Western women are a bit of a novelty!
Had a day out at the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza. Very spectacular but weird seeing them pretty much on the edge of the city - always pictured them out in the middle of the desert! Hard to believe these are around 3000 years old!! That night took an overnight train down to Aswan, which was suprisingly roomy and comfortable!
Aswan is a crazy little bazaar town on the Nile, gots hasselled loads in the bazaars and discovered I wasn't real good at haggling! Visited a Nubien village for dinner one night and did a camel ride in the area - Not the most comfortable or agreeable creatures!! Another early start here to head out to Abu Simbel, which was an awesome sight, the heiroglphs and pictures/carvings inside are amazing, and to thinmk they moved these whole structures to avoid the flooding of the Nile - a sensational feat I tell you.
We then boarded Feluccas - traditional Egyptian sailboats and sailed up (well actually downstream) to Adfu. Did pretty much nothing at all except lay on the deck in the glorious sunshine for 3 whole days - broken up with the odd visit to an ancient temple, and dip in the Nile.
At Edfu we transferred to Luxor where we spent a night and went donkey riding to the Valley of the Kings. I love donkeys - so funny, we made quite a sight the 20 of us riding hrough the little villages on uncontrollable donkeys!!
Yesterday we drove from Luxor to Hurgada - Egypts answer to Las Vegas, with all the themed resorts. Its on the Red Sea and apparently a popular destination for German and Russian tourists. We just had a few hours there last night before our very very early rise this morning.
Having a blast, wish you all could be here!
Guess I'll see most of you really soon.
Over and out!!
Loads of love and kisses
