Marty's Adventures
The day started out great....2 jeeps....5 people in each....nice and comfy! We made our way to the ferry to Fraser Island and pulled up on the ferry. We headed up top to search for turtles and dolphins which we did not see. While on the ferry we learned that one of the jeeps had broken down and they would move two people into our jeep and the other 3 were dispersed into other tour groups. So needless to say things got a bit squishy and sweaty and I may of had moments of I wish I had booked the coach tour! It was a bit of a hair raising ride across the island. Fraser Island is the biggest sand island....a rainforest growing on a sand island!?? The road were treacherous as there has been no rain lately which makes the vehicles just sink in the sand......so our driver did a great job getting us through. I was extremely happy to see the beach and smooth driving!! What fun! Our driver Chris, a 40 year old rough and tough Aussie dude who's wife is about to have a baby and called me darling all day.....ripped down that beach.....waves coming in water splashing over the front of the jeep! FUN! Our first stop was the the Maheno shipwreck which back in the early 1900's was luxury liner. Australia sold it to Japan who tried to tow it back but it broke free and ended up grounded on Fraser Island. It is 3 storeys under the sand! The Australians used it for missile target practice at one point during the world wars but never actually hit the mark! We also went to a place called this pinnacles which are similar to hoodoos. Then we went to Eli Creek, this is a freshwater creek that comes from inland. It has quite a current and you can walk up to the top on the board walk or wade up, which I did (hard work) then just glide down missing the odd rock or tree back down to the beach! Super fun! Then beach is an actual highway with speed signs and police AND is a runway for small air crafts. We had to stop and wait for a plane to land and again for one to take off..... We then headed back inland and went for a walk through a rain forrest, along a creek which was a birthing place for the Butchella people who were the aboriginal people of Fraser Island. It was a beautiful spot, the water so clear you would almost think there was no water. Chris made us a great lunch out of the back of the jeep, champagne and beer to go along! A nice cool mid afternoon break! We then made of way to a place called Mackenzie Lake, a fresh water later....rain fed....and we were able to swim and enjoy the area. We did not see any dingos as they said we likely would.... The ride back the rest of the way was even more hair raising, Chris just put the pedal down and gave it everything at points....there were a few times when he said hold on and brace yourself and we did.....wow....he did an amazing job getting us out of there without getting stuck....considering the day before he did get stuck!! The ride back across the ferry was very windy and choppy.....the ferry was rocking about in more of a jarring kind of way! There was an amazing sunset though! Chris got us back safe and sound. I was so exhausted I barely lasted through making supper.....fell I to bed....zonked.....another amazing day!
