Marty's Adventures
Up and at it very early with a 645am pick up for our tour to the Condor Canyon. The drive through the canyon was spectacular. Every angle was amazing, we even saw the active Volcano smoking. It last erupted in the 90's and is now expected to erupt anytime. We wound around switch backs higher and further into the canyon. Not the best roads and at one point we drove through the mountain, in the middle of the tunnel you could not see the light of day! I may of been praying through the whole tunnel! We drove through a village called Macca that also in the 90's they thought had an earth quake, turned out just the area of the village sunk a few meters and the village was destroyed.
We wound our way to the canyon and we had a spectacular show. Our guide told us that we likely had the best show in a long time. The condors were soaring around the canyon and even at times right over our heads. The Condor is a massive bird with a wing span of 3 meters!! Imagine that flying right over your head! AMAZING! I may of been squealing with delight! As we had gone with a tour group we had to move on. Our guide Victor told us great stories of the Condors and the canyon. It was an excellent tour. We stopped in Macca on the way back to visit the restored Church.
We were dropped off in our sleepy village in the main square and had lunch while cows meandered around the square and then were chased out. We could see the smoking volcano right from the square and it was smoking even more! We went back to our B&B and got changed into shorts as the day was turning into a scorcher and we had a big hike planned!
Our host at B&B walked us to where the hike begins. We started off passing donkeys loaded up followed up by their owner. We saw this a few times and even watched an unruly donkey pulling his owner all over the place while his wife who was also loaded up watched! The path at times reminded me of the Camino at times, cobble stone paths and stones fences all while dodging donkey dung! We crossed the canyon on a big bridge then climbed our way up up up to some Inca ruins. The Uyo Uyo ruins. The Inca sure liked being way up in the mountains! Today we were really feeling the altitude I guess because we're so active! We made our way down from the ruins and walked through fields of quinoa, bright red and orange. It was so beautiful. We did not have a trail guide, but the map had showed we could walk along the hot springs and cross a wooden suspension bridge. I think they have forgotten to update the map as the bridge is closed. We had to walk all the way back up the side of the mountain and go around and down the other side where there was another bridge. It was a wonderful afternoon, we never saw another tourist just the odd local and donkeys.
Needless to say, we are both exhausted! We were happy to walk back into our sleepy village and watch horses racing through the intersection ahead of us!
