Marty's Adventures
What an amazing adventure we have had! Now it is time to make our way home, it was a looooong day! We were able to have a sleep in, I was up earlier and ended up going for a walk around the town and over to the square in hopes of the Market being there but I guess they only set up long enough to catch the 7am tourist buses heading up to the Colca Canyon. I saw lots of women loaded up seeming to be on the way to somewhere. I headed back and we had breakfast. This little B&B in Yanque is a little piece of paradise. Just like our waiter at the lodge next door told us last night!
Thankfully we were able to pay everything including our food, tour and transfer on visa as we still had not seen a working ATM. We were literally down to a few soles, enough for snacks and water. We had a great breakfast and then went for another walk. Our bus picked us up at the B&B at 1145am and we headed into Chivay for lunch. They have the whole tourist bus and transfers here in Peru down to a science. Amazing how it all works and how many tourists buses you see on the roads!
We wound back up through the volcanos and then headed to Arequipa. Just before we arrived into the city there was a very large cement plant. It looked very out of place and monstrous as there doesn't seem to be any buildings over three stories. We arrived into the main square of Arequipa with luggage in tow. We didn't want to lug it around so we asked some random travel agent place of they would store it for us....sweet for a small tip and us arranging a taxi to the airport through them we left our bags in the back of this place.
The main square was beautiful and as with every main square we visited there was a beautiful church or Cathedral. Seeing as it was a Saturday afternoon it was not the typical touristy day, it was filled with local families enjoying the beautiful day. We wound or way through old buildings and squares and markets exploring. Sad that we only had the afternoon/evening to explore this city. Was so nice wandering while the sunset beyond the cobble stone streets.
After a lovely evening we went back to the travel agent and thankfully our luggage was still there safe just like he told us. A pre-arranged taxi picked us up right outside the store front. Our taxi driver was funny, he talked and talked and we attempted to decipher what he was saying. We got some but a lot of it we had blank looks on our faces but he just kept chatting and smiling and laughing. It was a great conversation, I think! Driving out of the main area of the city through the sketchy parts of town in thick bumper to bumper traffic with no rhyme or reason. People wandering through the traffic, buses full and when I say full I mean packed like sardines full of people. We spent a lot of time at a stand still, I kind of got the vibe the driver was feeling a little uneasy. He was constantly checking the surroundings and then at one point locked the doors. I started to feel his uneasy feelings and just wanted to get to the airport but in the same breath it was neat to see the hustle and bustle of a Saturday night. Seems everyone was out and about. There were gas station lots full of food carts and carts of just about anything and locals of all ages streaming around.
We arrived at the airport and had recently booked a flight on Peruvian Airlines back to Lima. We were the only tourists on the flight, seemed a bit wierd. We feel like we have been doing things our own way and backward of what all the other tourists. Great experiences. There was some local celebrity on the airplane with us. People were swooning over him and everyone wanted pictures with him. Turns out he is Gaston Acurio a famous Peruvian Chef. Our flight to Lima was an hour and 25 minutes.
It is very late and we still have 24 hrs of travelling through the night to get home!
