Marty's Adventures
I woke up to a quiet square out my window this morning. I had a bit of a sleep in and wasn't in too much of a rush. I headed out around 930 and just wandered. There are so many tiny streets you could walk in every direction and through little tunnels. Thankfully I didn't get lost as I needed to be at the Powder Tower aka the royal gate by 11. I was joining a free walking tour of Old Town and the Jewish Quarters. I had a great guide and a very small group so she kind of took us to a few spots she doesn't normally go. She brought us into tiny mid-evil squares And told us great stories. We went in to the Church of our Lady which is a mid-evil looking church right on the Old Town Square. Of course we visited the Astronomical Clock. We then made our way over to the Jewish quarters and did a quick tour. I decided not to carry on to the castle portion of the tour and stay and tour the Jewish Quarters on my own as everything is closed tomorrow (Saturday). First I needed lunch, so I decided to just walk into a restaurant randomly and had a traditional Czech lunch. It was roast pork, sauerkraut and dumplings. So yummy! I am definitely lacking vegetables this weekend! I decided to do a self tour, you get a ticket that gets you into 5 Synagogues and the Jewish Cemetary. The one Synagogue, called Pinkas Synagogue has names painted on the walls of victims of the holocaust from Czech. The names are also read out loud as you are passing through. There is also art work of children who did not survive. Was very sad to see the art and then the child's names with date of birth and death next to it. I ended the tour with the Spanish Synagogue, which was the most beautiful of them all. After I finished touring the Jewish Quarters I returned to my apt for a another layer of clothing! I decided I would go on a boat cruise on the Vltava River. I walked down to the bridge and was able to get on a one hour cruise which takes you up to the castle and under the Charles Bridge. I did it just as the sun was going down so the light was amazing and then finished in the dark. I had heard that the Wenceles Square was beautiful so I made my way down different tiny streets. All these little streets are cobble stone. I found the square and meandered through the Christmas Market. So far the Leipzig markets have been my favourite, so much more to see and way more food options. I made my way back to my apt around 7 pm. By this time I had been walking for 10 hours less the one hour river cruise. Too tired to venture out in the evening.
