Waking up to Heinz beans on toast (the British recipe) seemed to be a sign of good things to come as a vague outline of normality was coming back into view. The plan today was to walk along the coastline to Bondi Beach, something I was really looking forward to as it's such an iconic place.
Walking along Tripadvisor's third rated 'thing to do' in Sydney was great! The views were incredibly picturesque and accompanied by a thick slice of banana bread toast the day was going splendidly.
Surprisingly, the walk along the cliffs only took about an hour and before we knew it we had rounded the final corner to see the auspicious Bondi Beach.
Chelsea and Jodie decided to browse the shops while I optimistically decided to rent a surfboard, you can't come to Bondi and not surf! Renting a board turned out to be a bit of a mistake as when I got up to my nipples in the water I realised just how big the waves were; they towered over me like mountains, but not one to be put out I took a comical gulp of air and started to paddle out further.
Sitting astride my board I nodded expertly at what had to be the locals with their long hair and expensive looking surfboards, they didn't seem very interested in me sitting on my mattress of a board and I was free to wander around on my own. By the end of my hours rental I think it is safe to say that I spent more time under the water than on top of it and despite on occasions fearing for my life I managed to catch a few waves and not totally shame myself - at least now I can say that I've surfed/survived Bondi beach.
The rest of the day was spent sunbathing and people watching with a peanut butter milkshake in hand. Fitness and coffee are huge parts of the culture her and slender women and huge men are walking everywhere, oiled up to the gills in carrot oil or some such substance, ashen faced I pulled my swimming trunks back over my hips were I had been attempting to maximise tannage.
Following a really sumptuous meal in the iconic 'Icebergs' which over looks Bondi and sports an outdoor pool which the sea crashes into rhythmically and sprays white foam into the air. With a surf and turf sitting happily in my belly we caught an Uber taxi home, dabbed moisturiser on our red bodies and settled into our beds after an extensive search for cockroaches.
