G'day!
Well we've been in the wee campervan a week now, and the little fellow is doing the business for us. Kim's even named him Winston (even before we'd picked it up!!!!) what significance the name has only she knows!!!
From Queenstown we went to Te Anau, a starnge place the town centre is one street, very funny. Used this place as a stopover to Milford Sounds. If you are visiting NZ, go to Milford Sounds. Even if it rains - as it did for us, (we got soaked!!) go, its amazing!! The drive there is amazing! I don't think you will ever see more spectacular scenary!
Just a quick mention to Pat and Rodger, you should have gone when it rained and not turned back!! Loooooosers! Well you are from Yorkshire anyways - unlucky!!
Since leaving Te Anau, we went onto Dundein, home of NZ first university!! WOW! Dunedin is Celtic for Edingburgh!! Oooh! So what did we do there? Well, top of Kim's list was a trip to Cadbury World, and top of mine, Speights Brewery! Plus seeing some Albatross and YellowEyed penguins.
First up Cadbury World. I have never been put off chocolate so much in my life before. Sampling the coca beans, was horrible & the smell on the floor of where they produce the Moro bar (thats Mars to us English folks) was nasty! Kim loved it! No cameras were allowed in here due to all the Cadburys secret recipe we were shown! Yeah right!! It was only so bits would'nt drop off cameras into chocolate bars! Anyways, Cadburys do a much better range of choccy bars - the Pinky, marshmallow coated with chocolate, the buzz, marshmallow, chocolate & caramel not forgetting Pineapple Lumps & Perky Nana! So at the end of the tour we of course hit the Cadbury shop! And spent money.
Onto Speights Brewery - bloody brilliant place - you can sample all the beers they make, learn the fascinating history, and see the actual working brewery - look and learn Heineken!!! You could take pics in here, but I foolishly put the camera in a locker - d'oh!
Next day went to see some Albatross - a kind of giant seagull - Kim disputes this but I'm writing the blog, so tough!
Then went to see some of the rarest penguins in the world - the Yellow Eyed Penguin - these guys are very anti social so only hang around in pairs. But we manged to see some - check the pics!!
Goodbye Dunedin, and Wanaka!
En route we dropped in on Oamaru. Oamaru was a should we, should'nt we stop off, but it was definitly worth it. There they have a Blue penguin colony. These are the smallest species of penguin, therefore cute little b*****s. We went to watch them at dusk as this is when they come ashore from a days fishing and it was an amazing sight to see. Unfortunatly camers were not permitted, however if you go to http://www.penguins.co.nz/ you can see pics and even watch them on webcam!!
We saw some Maori rock art on the road from Oamaru to Wanaka, I can't say I was very impressed, it resembled a piece of art from a five year old using a pencil. Lets just say I'm sure there are much better Maori artists out there, and that guy should have gone hunting with the rest of the guys and left the crayons in the packet!
Anyway here we are in Wanaka, a smaller version of Queenstown, but not full of idiots. A very nice laid-back place.
Watch this space....
Lots of love to you all,
Rick & Kim xxxx
