Coober Pedy to Erldunda
On the road again and this was a big day travelling about 450 K's to Erldunda which is the turn off point to Uluru. It was a long day in the car with only a few stops to see the sights. We headed out at about 8.30 from Coober Pedy leaving the moonscape of Coober Pedy to head from the Border. You may think that the road trip is boring and that you look out at nothingness but that is not the case the landscape changes constantly from the barren land around Coober Pedy to the Mulga and pastures near Marla. We stopped for lunch in Marla after passing our first road train and also a convoy of Caravans. Yes my heart was in my mouth as the falcon smoothly inched passed the vans one by one. These vanner's were very organised as they would radio ahead to ask the front van if it was clear to pass and then indicate to us that we could go round, this was a wonderful way to work together and we were very grateful to them. Marla was a great place to stop for lunch and it was out of the car and into the van for Sangers and coffee. We made the sanger's and as there was no power on we filled the thermos for an cuppa and the ferrall's had a coldie from the fridge this is a great way to go as the cost of eating at each of these places would be astronomical.
Then it was off to hit the boarder. The next stop was of course the obligatory photo op at the Boarder and after seeing virtually no cars or vans it is surprising that at this stop it was packed. You had to wait to take a photo amazing! This has been the case all the way though nothing seems to be on the road and you stop and there is all of a sudden heaps of people. We seem to be seeing the same vans over and over again. Kulgera was the next stop for fuel and the falcon didn't like it at all and refused to take any but we had plenty and the stop didn't look that good so we pushed on to Erldunda.
Erldunda was much better and we got a site and were set up by 2.30 so we had time to put the feet up. It was a lovely camp site with grass and everything but fuel was 40 cents dearer and the showers left a lot to be desired. But it is funny you setup and someone will come over for a chat which is nice but Australia may be big in size but you seem to find someone you know or someone who knows someone you know and this is how we met Jill and Bill. Jill is related to a old bloke that use to work with Steve in Korumburra, far out you can't hide. So we had a great chat with them and they gave us a few hints on where to go and what to do. Can you believe they have been on the road for 15 years and they have recently permanently made the move to be nomads forever by selling their house, Oh to be retired! The wild life was good too with Bush Chooks (Emus) over the fence and a friendly skippy who slept next James for the night. Steve was very impressed with the topless backpackers at the pool and was off with Callum for a dip but unfortunately the backpackers were gone and the pool was to cold to swim poor Steve. Off to Uluru tomorrow so it was off to be early.
