We woke up and headed down the road to a hotel so we could rent a scooter to drive to the sand dunes. The first place we went to wanted $10 to keep the bike for 24 hours so we went back up the road to a shop who offered bike rental. They charged us $7 for an automatic for 24 hours so we took that one. We drove further up the road into town to get some breakfast and we ended up at a place called Joe's.
In the menu there was an introduction about him and his family as well as the beach and why there isn't much of it left. Turns out we were sitting on it as the sand from the beach stretched 16km inland! I ordered a road chicken sandwich on brown bread with melted cheese and mango salsa and daniel had a tortilla wrap. I had a carrot juice to drink as i love it and it's so healthy.
We settled the bill and mounted the scooter to begin our very careful journey to the white sand dunes (which seem more popular than the red ones).
We turned left off the main strip by the coast and onto a dual carraigeway and we were the only people on it! The roads were in great condition and there were beautiful flowers separating the lanes and we had it all to ourselves, we weren't going fast though. Not taking any chances.
It was a nice drive with a view of the sea and fishing boats to our right. It was overall about a 30km trip which was a breeze as there were hardly any other vehicles on the road. We followed rough signs on how to get there which lead us on a dirt road around the edge of a big lake. The lake looked so out of place with mountains of pure, white sand in the backdrop; a beautiful view.
We had to pay to park our scooter and headed in the direction where the dunes are. We were offered a quad bike to ride but it was $50 for 30 minutes! Extortion! As we walked through the fine sand, you could tell it was a particularly warm day as the grains on sand that crept into our flopflops were burning the soles of out feet. This put us off walking around them all as there was no shade either so we stayed taking some nice photos then walked back through to where our bike was parked when we decided to ride an ostrich spontaneously.
They were massive with long giraffe-like necks and big, round beady eyes perturbing out the side of their face like shiny marbles. Dan got on first, he sat on a small seat tied to the top of the bird and went round the penn pretty quickly. I went after him, i felt scared and sorry for the ostrich as their legs are only slim and i didn't want to hurt it. But, i seized the moment and realised i would probably never get the same opportunity again so it got on carefully and went round slower compared to Daniel. We paid, said goodbye and got ready for the journey back.
As Daniel's arm began aching him from steering the bike, i drove us home which i was nervous but excited about. I had improved a lot and steering and control was a doddle. It felt so good to be behind the wheel of a vehicle again, i miss driving back home. It was an easy, scenic drive back but we missed the turning that we started from and to add to the situation, our tank was running on empty so i pulled over and we asked a security guy at a villa about gasoline stops and he pointed down the road where we saw a petrol station.
We filled the tank up with a litre of gas and headed down the 10km strip by the beach where our villa is. We stopped off at a bakery and daniel ran in to see if there was anything nice, which there wasn't so we stopped off at Joe's cafe again and i had an iced vietnamese coffee. We booked our bus tickets for tomorrow at 13:00 to take us to Dalat which cost $6 each. On our journey back the roads were a lot busier with coaches, taxis, busses and motorbikes and you need to be assertive at all times. I had the driving under control and we arrived back to the villa safely.
We changed into our swimwear and headed into the pool which was a perfect temperature. We never went on the beach once as it doesn't look very nice.
We had a swim before the sun set before packing our things together. It was only us in the hotel last night but today there was a group of chinese people who were splashing around in the pool. There was a man who kept making that horrid fleming sound and spitting. After contemplation, we decided to drive into the main area of the strip for something to eat. I drove driving very carefull and going slowly and steady down the road. We ended up at an open plan restaurant and ordered spring rolls, chicken satay and rice for me and what daniel thought he ordered was fried noodles with a crispy egg. When the food came we were both pretty disappointed. My chicken satay was really a butterfly chicken breast with a teaspoon of satay sauce (the same that came with our miscellaneous filling spring rolls). There was the smallest portion of rice with it and Daniel was gutted with his when he saw the noodles were hard and there weren't many of them. After he checked the menu we realised his mistake. He ordered crispy fried egg noodle with chicken thinking it was normal fried noodles. We both left pretty hungry and the woman who cleared away our plates was very apologetic although we told her we just weren't very hungry.
We went across the road to a fresh seafood cafe with tanks of water holding live animals. I saw frogs, turtles, fish and crabs. But, it was the fruit stand next to the fish i was after. I got two mangoes and one pineapple peeled and chopped to takeaway and stored them under the seat. Daniel drove us back and we stopped off at a small shop to buy cookies and chocolate before heading back to the villa to watch "thor" and get some sleep.
