After the cockroach incident, surprisingly, i was able to get some sleep. When i woke up Dan said that we stopped for ages at Pnom Penh and there must have been a break down as the drivers were working on the bus with tools. It got to 08:30 which was the time we were supposed to arrive in sihanoukville but we were far from it. At 10:00 we stopped off for the chance to get breakfast, i went to the toilet; it's a horrid journey when it's that time of the month. We bought a donut bun and some pineapple and sat at a table. I got chatting to two german girls. A man who worked at the pit stop place offered breakfast and said it is still another three hours to sihanoukville, shocking! We declined and boarded the bus again. As we were on the bottom bunks, we didn't have windows so couldn't look out at the road signs to try and determine where we are.
We ended up arriving at around 12:30, we pulled up at the bus station and clambered off the bus. We grabbed our backpacks and we greeted by tuktuk drivers. We agreed to pay $6 for a man to take us to serendipity beach to find a guesthouse, he didn't have a tuktuk, he was driving a car and we were saying how long it's been since we've been in an actual car! He dropped us off at a guesthouse just a minute away from the beach and the man at reception met us from the car and took us to see the rooms. Firstly, he showed us a $15 room with air con but we opted for exactly the same room but without the air con for $8. I washed some of my clothes and we sat on our porch smoking a spliff before we hit the beach.
There are a few stalls selling t shirts, bikinis, dresses and flip flops before you get on the beach as well as bar after bar after bar serving cheap booze and food. When we stepped on the beach it looked decent, not too busy. We decided to stop off in one of the cafes right by the beach for some food. We were sitting at a table when we were ambushed. About four women approached me asking if i wanted a massage, manicure or threading. When they ask where you're from and you say london ALL of them respond with "lovely jubbly", funny at first, annoying after. A group of kids surrounded us asking if we want bracelets. There was one for each of us and two more. My little kid asked what my fabourite colour is and i said pink, so he dived inside his bag and pulled out a massive ball of different coloured string. He got two pink ones out, tied the top and asked me to hold it while he plaited the strings together. I kept repeating "i have no money, tomorrow i will buy one off of you". He kept saying no money, for good luck you know, no money. He finished the bracelet off and tied it around my wrist, and then the small girl he was with stuck a semi permanent tattoo on my arm from a sweet. Daniel kept his blue one that was made for him but i felt obliged to give my pink one back as i had no money to give him. They wouldn't leave, even after dan gave them $1. My kid ended up grabbing a pair of scissors and slicing my bracelet in half angrily saying something i couldn't understand. We decided to move onto the loungers on the beach to order food and get away from all the hassle.
I ordered a banana shake and we both went for bbq chicken with salad and fries. There was also garlic bread too but it was awful, made from that horrible sweet butter. We lay in the sun trying to sunbathe and relax but kept getting hassled for manicures, massages, sunglasses and just people begging for money. When our food came the hassle stopped thank god. It wasn't only natives hassling us. There are herds of young tourists giving out flyers for the bar they work at boasting mud wrestling, free shots, 2 for 1 cocktails and beer as well as a booze cruise. The hassle is just too much so i think we will rent a bike and head to a quieter beach tomorrow.
The sea has a lot of rubbish bits of plastic in it which is a shame because the water is actually quite clear and of warm temperature. There were tourists going into the sea with bags and fishing out the rubbish. Dan also spotted a jellyfish which put me off massively. We paid the bill and headed back to the guesthouse to chill and smoke. When we got back we sat on the balcony playing music, it was such a relaxed atmosphere. We showered and changed and headed back to the beach front to find a place to eat.
We ended up sitting right on the beach on comfy chairs, we ordered BBQ barracuda with potato, salad and sauce. We had a mug of Anchor beer while we waited for our food to arrive. It was a fillet, and a very meaty one too. I didn't think it tasted much like fish but it was nice. After dinner we contemplated going to JJ's bar for a few drinks but thought we would go tomorrow instead. We headed back to the guest room to chill out and get some sleep.
