Gili Tarawangan is one of 3 islands, 2 of them are meant to be quite quiet and the other (Tarawangan) is the liveliest, we chose the one furthest out so it took us 12 hours to get there which we weren't too impressed with as the lady at the Hotel said we would be there for 2pm.We were picked up at 6am and got there at 6pm, it was such a stressful day with getting on a minibus, getting to the dock and the boat not leaving for over an hour so we were forced to eat in a restaurant, when it was time to leave some guys picked up our bags and shot off with them, we hot footed it after them, got on the boat and they started demanding $20 usd from us, we stood our ground and disagreed with them (it was 15 minutes until the boat left and I can argue for a lot longer than that as Aaron will confirm I'm sure!) we gave them the change we had previously gotten ready for them and they trunched off the boat, we went and stupidly sat on the top deck and burnt after sitting in the sun for 5 hours! The island was lovely though, you could cycle around it in an hour and had a good stretch of bars and diving to keep us occupied!Aaron was meant to have sorted our open water diving out but it all fell through, we then went out far too much and missed the opportunity to do the course (Marie this is actually your fault, for wanting your hen night). So we opted for a DSD (Discover Scuba Diving) just to test the water (sorry for the pun).We had a small briefing about hand signals under the water (we were about to struggle I could tell as the 'thumbs up' we use means 'I need to go up') we then got all our clobber on, (sorry my hands were wet so no piccys) and got into the pool to get used to the pressure, popping ears, breathing from a tank, hand signals and how not to panic also how to swim with a 10 tonne of air on a 7stoner (so hard not to float to the top). The pool freaked us both out and we were about to back out of the dive when we were summand to our fate, it was great though, we even did that roll backwards into the water you see on films! The fishys and coral was amazing, we both ended up having our hands held to stop us floating away and I was dragged off the sea floor a few times too!We saw 5 hughmongus sea turtles which looked bigger than me but I was assured they weren't!So it was back to Kuta after our fun on the Gili, another 13 hour trip to get back but have to pick up things that are too expensive in Oz!
