We left early yesterday, catching the ferry to Butterworth, then a coach up to Alor Setar. Arriving at the bus station we found out there weren't any direct buses to Kuala Perlis where we needed to get the boat to Thailand so we got a long distance taxi for the 1 hour drive to Kuala Perlis. We were probably ripped off but it saved us some hassle and still only cost a few pounds. The next few hours were a state of confusion as nobody spoke good English and couldn't really describe what we needed to know despite their best efforts. We resorted to saying 'Satun' (the place we needed to go) repeatedly and worked out which little boat we needed to catch. So we went to the little immigration counter and worried when he asked us where our form was that we filled in when we entered Malaysia. Explaining we hadn't been given one he stamped our passports and we waited for the boat. The longtail boat is thin and unsurprisingly, is long and has a long tail, which is the motor. We watched as it was stacked full of cargo before the people motioning for us to get on, along with a few other passengers. We did a few stops around the Kuala Perlis port, including towing one boat back to shore, before heading out to sea. It was quite an experience, sat in front of a very loud engine in a boat that only just seemed seaworthy. However, it was fun and certainly made a change from the other forms of transport we have been using up until then. We arrived at Satun port and passed through immigration (getting more and more passport stamps! :) ). We changed some Ringits into Baht and got on a open backed van to the bus station. We booked buses through a tour and again were probably ripped off but arriving in a new place where the alphabet is different and you have no idea what to do, you tend to go for the easy option which is what this seemed. Though it was still only about 9 pounds for a reasonably long coach trip. We got on a coach which we assumed was for us and we went to Trang where we arrived at about 5pm. The lady from the coach managed to get across that we had to change buses but the 5pm bus was full, so we sat in Trang bus station until the 6.30 bus left. Our first night bus journey. We thought the trip would be around 2 hours long so around 2 hours in we watched out for Krabi, which wasn't easy when Thai letters are used. Luckily a lady near us spoke English and was getting off at the same place so we followed her. We caught a open backed taxi to Cha Hostel, a recommended place to stay and treated ourselves to a room with a bathroom. It came to about 2 pounds each per night and it is very nice. We grabbed some Hawker food, had a wonder and had a beer at a small Rasta bar, and played some pool with one of the staff. Had a lie in in the morning and woke up 19 years old! Went for a walk along the river and found a place for a cold drink, and as we were about to leave, the heaviest rain I have ever seen started, so we decided to grab some food. Ever since we arrived in Asia, Wil tended to have the same or very similar meals as I did. However, today he tried something different to me, and managed to choose what was probably the hottest and spiciest item on the menu, he was jealous of my chicken in coconut milk with vegetables. So apparently I am now choosing his every meal, maybe I'll order him more hot food, it was fun to watch! The rain is still heavy at the moment so we are just sitting in the hostel relaxing before heading out this evening.
