From Cuzco we took an overnight stop in Puno before we headed to La Paz! On first arriving into the city, it is one of the most amazing views. Thousands of houses climb up the steep hills of the city and the city itself is surrounded by miles and miles of huge mountains, some towering over 5000 meters high!
We had three days in La Paz and one of them was Biking the Worlds Most Dangerous Road (WMDR). So, the first two days were spent just checking out the sights La Paz has to offer, which we found out is not a great deal. The main thing about La Paz is the amazing beauty around it, not so much in it. There is a cool witches market were we found some Llama Foetuses and lots of souvenirs.
Onto the WMDR; it was an early start and we were on our bikes racing down the tarmac at 50 MPH by eight am. The first stretch was about 20 Kms of tarmac which was great fun being able to go at speed, with all this beautiful scenery around you. Then the difficult part, the gravel. It was a long and twisting road, that was about 3 meters wide in some parts and you were taken through varying degrees of steepness. At times we both felt well out of our comfort zone as we cycled across things that can only be described as bolders. Becky and I both did not quite realise how difficult a bike ride it would be, and after 44 km of gravel rd, you really felt it on your hands, as they had been gripping so hard to stop you from making a mistake and falling over the edge. To be honest the WMDR is definately a gimick, as it does not seem that dangerous as you ride the path and only a handful of bikers die on the road every few years. But, it was good fun and well worth doing!
The following day was a full day of buses and trains to Uyuni and onto the Salt Flats- supposedly one of the most amazing things to see in the world!
