Our beach view chalets were, well what I was expecting, however lacking some features from the modern world.
1) air conditioning. Yet it did have a fan that pushed the heat around and did cool it off a little.
2) a toilet that properly flushes
3) hot water.
I greatly enjoyed the chalets. Basic, simple. Bed was clean and did have a mosquito net over the bed, and drinking water was supplied in a massive thermos which you can go get filled down at the reception. And the cold showers, which were slightly warmed up from the 40deg heat outside. But it was brisk and refreshing from the heat.
Alyssa on the other hand, didn't mind it, she would have preferred air conditioning and hot water. But it was the odd creepy crawler that would come up through the floor boards which really... Bugged! her. Ha ha!
The Bamboo Hill chalets for $90rm a night. We're basic. But average Accommodation for that side of the island. If you wanted AC or hot water you'd be looking at paying around $200-300rm a night. But what do you expect for being on the edge of a jungle, on an island. One thing I greatly enjoyed was the size of the chalets, balcony, and the view, was fantastic.
As i later found out, Tioman island was primarily a diving and snorkeling island with 4 dive centers on ABC beach ( Ayr Batang ) and countless others throughout Tioman. There wasn't much for the non Diver to do, besides drink, socialize with other divers or lay on the beach that all except one on ABC beach, had lots of sand flys. Luckly I have a very understanding girlfriend. That was willing to put up with it while I was diving for 2 days. She did get a lot of reading done.
The temperature is about 40deg, and extremely humid, which led to nightly lighting shows off in the distance. Even for the locals this was rare to have it this hot. And the only escape is the odd rain storm which comes through every few days, which lowers te temperature for a few hours. But brings an onslaught of bugs. Luckly the geckos clean up the flying b******s pretty quickly at night.
The island itself has about 6 main sections to it. Selang being more of a resort style section. With a beach loaded of sand flys. Ayr Batang, which was a quiet, relaxed area. No cars are on the island, only little scooters with side cars to take supplies up and down the beach town. As for the other ones, they are all about the same, one being mainly the "local" town where most of the locals live and go to school. ( if they go at all )
The Ferry comes frequently, at least 3-4 times a day. Which will take you up to the mainland or another section of the beach. Or you could hire a water taxi to and from each section of the island.
Cats: there are a crap load of cats and kittens all breeding like rabbits, most missing parts of their tale. And there are monkeys... Evil, mean monkeys. But I was fortunate enough not to encounter any.
There's a few stores on the Island for your basic needs. A few good restaurants and happy hour starts at 5!
