The road to Cameron Highlands was a very, windy, long, but beautiful ride. Alyssa taking Gravol to sleep through her motion sickness. Missed out on the beautiful mountains, and bamboo houses, and stores along the road side. Some with thatched bamboo leaves as roofing, others with the standard rusty, metal roofing we've been used to seeing across the country.
If you blink, you could drive past the Cameron Higlands town we were staying it, despite it's size. And location, it was a fairly modern town. With banks. Post offices. Lots of restaurants. ( mainly Indian with a malay twist. ) and some very, very nice cars you wouldn't expect to see up that remotely from a major town. A Hummer, Mercedes, and a porcha were among some of the ones I saw. Which Is very surprising in itself to see since the government puts a ridiculous tax ( I've heard somewhere between 100-400%) on imports, In order to keep the money in the country to boost the economy.
We checked into our little villa style guesthouse just off the main drag called "Camorian inn" And went to go grab some dinner. And book our day long jungle trek the next day.
The following day. We got picked up at 8am in an old Toyota land cruiser with 5 other people from other hotels around the area. A very hot and stuffy hour ride later we arrive at the trail head where us, And another land cruiser full of people lather up on sun screen and bug spray, and begin our muggy and hot bug filled jungle trek through swamps, over a river, through bamboo to these giant Flowers that only bloom for 7 days and then wither and die. These flowers, which are actually a type of a fungus, because they grow on the roots of trees and not the ground. They can grow up to 14kg. And make a popping sound when they bloom in the middle of the night.
3 years later we arrive back at hour land cruisers, where we head back into town to grab a quick lunch, then Head to the Boh tea plantation we take a quick tour of the plant where they still do it by hand, well some of them. Then drive through the roads of the plantation stopping along the way for photos. This german guy and I thought it be a good idea to ride on the top of the land cruiser, till we got to our next stop, the butterfly farm. And yes, it was a fantastic ride! Lots of fun, better than being stuck in stuffy cruiser.
The butterfly farm, which we were not told, but cost us about $20rm just to enter, we thought it was covered in the original cost. Was not exciting.. At all. It was small had a few butterflies. The cool part of it was the little rabbits and all the cages of insects.
Our final destination was the strawberry farm.. Which when we arrived, the skies opened up on us. Luckily the farm was covered, the strawberries were not as good as back home, slightly sour. And well most of us just went to the cafe, to have some very bad, dry strawberry yogurt cheese cake, while watching the massive rain shower unfolding in front of us.. If only I had some soap.
We decided to skip Perithean islands and head to Penang instead.. Which we will later regret.
