The new air bed does everything an air bed should do, most importantly remaining inflated over night! After I'd finished being smug, Jono emerged and carried me through an intense round of Free-letics on the fragrant grass, followed by a well earned dip in the babbling stream which bordered Jono's tent. Our breakfast selection now included Greek yoghurt and muesli but the air bed was soon deflated and the rear gunners seat in place, ready for a day touring the local cellar doors!
As Jono was an experienced wine scavving officianado he outlined the strict game plan as we arrived at the manicured lawns and fashionably furnished terrace of the first vineyard. We strode in passed the ornate water feature, jandals flapping, shiney foreheads gleaming and smiling widely proclaimed our near to complete lack of knowledge about anything to do with wine.
Luckily this had the desired effect in all of the 5 cellar doors that we visited and our kind hosts took us through a range of Pinot Gris, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gewertzstramminer, Pinot Noir, Cab Sauv etc. etc. explaining just what we should be tasting. I think we talked the talk rather well but beneath all the bluster I came away feeling that all the bottles of £4 corner shop wine we had 'seen off' returning from SB rugby games had been thoroughly under-appreciated.
At the fourth vineyard we enjoyed an amazing sharing platter including baked mussels, smoked hoki, salmon mousse, cold meats, with a fantastic selection of cheeses and preserves. This was all enjoyed in a Mediterranean style courtyard with a lovely atmosphere and I could quite happily have eaten the same platter every day for the rest of this trip.
Stop 6 was a big thank you to our long suffering driver. The fudge factory gave us a taste of an eclectic concoction of sweets before we finally came away with honey-pokey icecreams and an iced tea soda to carry us on the road back north.
After a small directional hitch in Picton we found ourselves winding endlessly along the climbing coast road. Our intention of driving for another hour or so to a remote inlet was scrapped when we pulled in for a break at the stunning Momorangi bay. There were only a few other campers on the waterfront and we parked up overlooking the huge bay with its steep tropical backdrop and there was no question of driving on.
We settled in and for entertainment I followed the campsite owners suggestion and gently jogged the bush path up the valley and onto the ridge, from where the view along the inlet was incredible. A quick swim into the bay soon returned my heart to my chest before Jono and I put the world to rights, chilling out on the swings in the sunshine.
Thai green curry a la Jono was marvellous, followed by gin rummy in which Bob cleaned up but not before being caught picking all of the chocolate buttons out of the Scroggin!!! For this heinous crime we fixed her next hand of cards whilst she was brushing her teeth, but she still won so we went to bed.
