Miffy's Mischievous Adventures
Hi all,
I was picked up at 06.30 and started the journey to Cambodia and Siam Reap. I took approximately 4 hours to reach the border and entering the country was pretty smooth. Cambodia is a completely different to all the other countries I've visited. It was like walking into a 3rd world country. The thing that struck me was that there was kids and disabled/anputees everywhere, begging. They don't just sit there they are all over you consistently asking you for money. The disabled generally follow you with the caps out asking for money where the kid are all over you pulling your arms and your legs pretending to cry and stuff. We had been warned a couple of times about the kids as some of then are pick pockets so I needed to behave like a dwarf at a urinal and consistently be on my tiptoes! It sounds strange but the worst thing you can do is give anyone any money because if you do you are mobbed by all the others...
Once through customs we boarded a bus that was going to take us to Siam Reap and on the notorious road from the boarder. Well you can't call it a road! Its just a red peat dirt track the width of a road with more craters in it that Seal's face (although he is married to Heidi Klum the super model). The journey to Siam Reap was meant to take about 3 hours but as it was lashing it down it made the poor excuse for a road even worse. I heard that the air lines actually pays the Cambodian government not to improve the road so travelers fly out of Cambodia which is cheap, rather than go by bus again. Anyway, the journey took 7 hours and this is a long time when you are seating in amongst the bags and you are being thrown about consistently. It was like the scene out of Ace Venturer when he was in the Jeep! In all the journey had taken 14 hours and on 2 hours sleep it was a monster but I suppose that is what all the traveling lark is all about.
In Siam Reap all I really had planned was to visit Angkor Wat and some of it surrounding temples. So I hired a Moto and driver and headed off for a day of temple viewing. The weather eas amazing. Angkor Wat is apparently one of the new 7 Wonders of the Worlds and to be fair it is a pretty spectacular place and all the Temples that I saw were special too. However, I'm glad that I only purchased a one day pass as I did visit a fair few temples and they all start to look the same. I visited the main one like Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Ta Promh and many more which was good. Again they was kid everywhere wanting your money! I can't explain it other than every one is young. I suppose that is what happens to a nation that suffered Genocide by the Khmer Rouge (its own people), who murdered over 2 million Cambodian, only thirty years ago! You go through the same conversation consistently which becomes so funny

Cutest little Cambodian child wonders off. One minute later another child starts trying to sell you something - queue the same conversation! The strangest thing is that there English is outstanding considering they are some young.
In the evening I investigated Siam Reap by foot which was a interesting and booked a bus ticket to go to Phnom Penh for the morning. I'd had a quality day but other than visiting Angkor Wat and the hundreds of surrounding temples there is much else to do.
Bye for now
