From San Francisco we were advised to follow Hwy 1 down the coast, so we did as far as San Gregorio where we turned inland to visit Big Basin State Park where there is another Redwood forest. The road in was like the Tail Of The Dragon, only longer, Julie was kind of over it by the time we rode into yet another majestic forest of Redwoods, just love riding through these places, and they are so much cooler too. By the time we hit Boulder Creek we were looking for a campground, we hadn't thought about the small fact that it was Saturday. Every campground to and past Santa Cruz was either full or didn't take tents, we were down near Manresa State Beach when we spotted a KOA campground and thought,"They always have sites, even if they are a bit expensive." Well this place was packed and turning people away, we asked if they had anything at all and the manager showed us a couple of bits of dirt he said we could set up on, one he wanted $50 for and the other $30, we took the $30 and asked how much they usually charge, he said they were the most expensive KOA in America and they ask and get $85 a night for a tent! $130 a night for a caravan! In the morning we continued down the coast to Monterey, this was a different kind of area with some nice coastal areas. We tried to ride around to Pebble Beach, even though we had been warned that we wouldn't be allowed? The road to Pebble Beach is a well known scenic road, that is owned by the rich people that live along it, they have banned motorcycles from using it! Claiming that it is very tight and twisty and that they can't get insurance to cover motorbikes. What crap! Not impressed, we continued on down Hwy 1. So far there had been lots of traffic and not too much to see, we were told that once we passed Big Sur that the road becomes really sweet and that the traffic would die off, wrong! The road was great and the scenery was very nice, but the traffic was ridicules, and having to watch the traffic so much I didn't really get a chance to look at the scenery. We stopped at one place to get fuel and had to pay $6 a gallon! The most we had paid before was $4, talk about ripping t

Mum/Marion Ooops Michael - i get the feeling Death Valley etc area is not at the top of your List ! and Petrol - unbelievable, - I think the American gallon capacity is 5 ltrs, as against Australian 4 ltrs, but boy, expensive and the camping fees too. Ah well, on to the next stop.
Janet Mac Sounds a bit hard in this area. Why is "Big Sur" familiar to me? Is it in a song? "Down in Monterey", where Jimi was.
