I forgot to mention in yesterday's entry that I had visited Tom Groome. Those who missed the RE wars in Parramatta will probably be unfamiliar with Tom, but it was his approach to religious education that caused us so many headaches with the lunatic right in my days there. He is a feisty Irishman with a deep care for the church, a great capacity for constructive criticism and a depth of scholarship to back him up. He was sharing with me that the book written by our nemesis Eamonn Keane which had been very critical of him (first of all) and the RE team in Parramatta (second) had had a huge following here, having been printed by a large publishing house. His defence against the calumny of A Generation Betrayed can be found on Tom's website at BC . Worth a read! He didn't take any prisoners!
To today - Jerry and Ruth joined me for breakfast here at the B and B along with a guy from upstate New York ( a fellow guest) who was visiting his daughter at BC. He commented on how, during her freshman year she couldn't get over the lack of diversity in the student body - but she absolutley loves the place now. He commented on how, as a Jew, he and his daughter were both deply appreciative of the Jesuit values embedded in the program. He also noted wryly that the college tuition he had paid would have bought him, in his home town, a house and three new cars by the time she graduates!
The sun shone with serious intent for the first time since I arrived, and didn't the campus look grand. See - I told you it was beautiful! A couple of other shots in the album as well.
The day was distinguished by finishing off three separate projects. By morning tea I had dispatched a finsihed journal article through the automated "author system" for the Journal of Educational Administration. By mid afternoon, Jerry and I had finished the chapter he had asked me to cowrite for a chapter in his latest book. By early evening Jerry had submitted his complete manuscript for the book (I hope I have half of his energy whan I am 75! ) and I had finished up the preparation for my public lecture next week. Don't know if anyone will come, but I'm ready for them!
Had tea with Ruth and Jerry in O'Hara's, the Irish pub, and now "home" tired but happy. Off to Cape Cod with Jerry tomorrow afternoon after a session with some of his doctoral students.
