MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
At 4.50am we set off up the mountain to see the sunrise at 6am. It's about a 40 minute hike up quite a steep slope with many many stairs and it's pitch black! We told Ada to have a sleep in so we went alone.........well we were alone except for a few hundred others, mainly Chinese. They did have torches however so they were quite handy to stay near. By the time we reached the top, the mist was so thick you couldn't see anything, not even the huge mountains. It's was quite cold although the walk up here had warmed us up quite a bit. As we waited and waited it appeared the mist wasn't going anywhere and slowly people started to leave. We decided to wait a little bit as sunrise was 6 and it was still a few minutes to go. Just when we thought we may as well go, the mist lifted, the mountains appeared and the sky lit up. It was quite magical and amazing. In the distance the cloud settled around the peaks so it looked like they were poking out of a big sea of milk. It was well worth the early start! After breakfast, we gather our backpacks, meet Ada and start the walk back to the cable car. It's still a lot of steps and there are a lot of people but we are going in the opposite direction to most. It's going to be a cool miserable day at the top so we are very lucky to have had the time we had. Back at the base our driver is there to pick us up and we head to a restaurant for lunch. Today we are served a local speciality of the area. It's fish. They are tiny little whole fish that have been deep fried so they are very crunchy. We closed our eyes and crunched away! Our flight back to Shanghai is not until 10.50pm so we go to the old street of Tunxi which is a mixture of old and reconstructed buildings. It's full of stalls and shops selling wood carvings, food, herbs, dried mushrooms, souvenirs etc. we decide to treat our feet to some treatment by the kissing fish and after the initial tickling sensation it's really quite relaxing. We meet Ada and have dinner and then we walked along the river front. At 7.30pm the music starts and a group of older women start dancing in front of us. Ada says it's a regular thing that the women of the local communities do for exercise and enjoyment. It's so random but they really get into it. Just down in front of us there are some ladies doing their washing in the river and further down stream there is a man fishing. From here we go to he hotel, pick up our luggage and go to the airport. It's been a great experience and we are very happy that we did it. Next stop Shanghai and we begin our tour.
