Well, apparently getting photos uploaded appears to be an impossible task here in Goa. Jesus! Yesterday I wanted to spend a few hours of our sparetime on an internet cafe and here is how it went: There are 3 internet cafees in Colva but one closes for siesta between 13 and 17 o'clock, the second only had four computers and they were all taken and then I finally got a computer at the third place but here they still use windows 98 or something so the software couldn't 'communicate' with my camera - damn. So instead I then just wanted to make the blog entry I made yesterday but no no after 15-20 minutes at the computer the owner told me they had to close because they had to fix some of the computers and wouldn't open for the next 3 hours... All computers still busy at the second place and still siesta at the first place so instead I just went home to the camp house and tried to use the internet there..... Well, that was a challenge as well as the speed equals that of a very very VERY old modem meaning it took 10 minutes just to actually load this site and everytime I tried making adjustments to my settings to notify some of you - the computer crashed and I had to start all over again. But finally I was able to write yesterdays entry...
Today our plans are to go to a quiet beach after lunch and just relax all day and maybe try parasailing if it is possible and not to expensive so I thought I would be able to go to the other two internet cafees and try to upload photos there. But today the first place, for some reason, closes an hour earlier for siesta (so back to square one) but all the computers were free at the second place - yipee!!!! But here there is no f***ing usb-port so I can't upload my photos!!! Sigh - why does it have to be so difficult? But another dy I will try the first place as that is my last chance or possibility for uploading photos while in Colva.
As I wrote above, the plans for today is just chilling and tomorrow we will go see a spice plantation a little east of here.
The house we are living in is an old Portuguese style house from the colonial time. We have a 'common room' with two desks and some chairs and mattresses and a tv and this is where our theoretical classes are given. The two boys have their own room with a bunk bed and we four girls share a room with three bunk beds. Thankfully we all have a fan in the ceiling of our rooms otherwise sleep would be impossible for me at night - mom and dad would never survive out here. And incredibly enough the very thin mosquito-net provides a temperature barrier of some sort such that the temperature inside the net is approx. 5 degrees higher than outside. Jesus. We also have a kitchen with two gas hot plates, a sink, a cupboard with different types of cereal and a fridge and a tank full of filtered water. Then there is also three toilets and showers - two of which are a little too interesting for my taste right now. I have tried the toilets but I am still too much of a chicken to try the two showers but I will do it within the next week!!! That is a promise I have made to myself.
Uh uh uh big news - made it into the scary shower this morning!!! I am so proud of myself and I actually think I will use that from now on as the water pressure actually exists there in contrast to the not-so-scary-shower.
India is indeed exotic - just the smell of the place is quite different and there are palm trees, geckoes, cows, dogs and different sorts of pigs etc. all over the place. The people we have talked to so far have been incredible nice and hospitable and most are eager to talk. It is also quite funny being an 'attraction' - to them we are as exotic with our white fair skin and blue eyes and light hair as they are to us. So when riding our bicycles around the town people will look at you and we are just waiting for the day when one of the guys going by on a motorcycle will crash as a result of him twisting his neck 180 degrees to keep looking at us. He he. And the other day when we went to Margao, as we got off the bus a local woman and her daughter openly stared and pointed at us smiling- probably the first time they have seen a 'white' person as Margao isn't really a 'touristy' place. Quite funny. And of course all the stories of salesmen trying to sell you all sorts of different things to locally high prices have been true so far. We have made three friends - three women, Silla+Tara+Salima, on our beach who walk around trying to sell henna tattoos etc. to the tourists on the beach - and we think they have a radar or something that must go off as we arrive at the beach because every time we have gone there they somehow manage to spot us from very very far away and steer right towards us. But they are very nice and accept the fact that we do not always want to buy something but then just sit down and talk. They actually live further down south in the state but during the tourist season they come up here with their families to try and earn some money. Silla is 27 years old and have 5 children already - oh my god.
Even though we have all heard the stories of rabid dogs and fear getting bitten it is still very hard to stay away from the dogs here - firstly because THERE ARE SO MANY but some of them are also really sweet and tame. The other day at the beach Jens (one of the boys) started patting a dog that had and it was very tame and really likes it and Nikolaj (the other boy) ended up taking the coolest and funniest picture of Jens shaking hands/paws with this dog on the beach. Ha ha - when I get my hands on it I will upload it for you to see. It is precious!!
Oh yeah, as girls we all have to get used to being stared at, not just for being fair skinned but also for being female. Usually when walking around in public we wear clothes that cover our knees and shoulders in order to avoid too much unwanted attention but still all the men stare. And at the beach we wanted to go bathe and therefore had bikinies on… Let's just say that within a short period of time a concentration of local men had build up despite the fact no one being near 5 minutes before. Oops, let's quickly dress up again. And since it is so humid here I have problems staying dry and comfortable at some places which have resulted in my boxers gnawing holes on my inner thighs. Ouch…. Now I have bought two pair of 'Aladdin' trousers (for real!!!) and in this way it will hopefully be much drier on my body. Unfortunately they are quite sheer and see-through so I felt rather exposed and uncomfortable when wearing them for the first time today. Let's see how that works out. (Next day comment) Well I certainly draw a lot of attention to myself when wearing these pants - so unfair that I probably get more negative attention when wearing the 'loacl' clothes than my indecent danish clothes. b*****. Will have to buy new pairs today... Well they only cost me 100 Rupees (as a result of excellent bargaining from my part!!) which is about 10-12 kr so...:)
That is it for me now - will return when possible. Hugs to all!
