We spent the first day in Cairns sunning by the lagoon reading a rainforest of leaflets on tours and trips around the east coast. We finally managed to choose everything we wanted to do, get buses between them, and be with companies that looked good - I wont spoil all the surpsise by saying all our plans now but it is an action packed fortnight!
The second day we went out on a snorkel trip to the outer Great Barrier reef and through our agent managed to get scuba dives for $10 each - so again we were on a boat listening to people saying how good value it was for only $60 a dive!
We refused to pay $10 for a guide so disappeared off on our own. The first site, Saxon Reef, was very beautiful and we saw lots of different fish, although the colours and the coral were not as vivid as many other places we have been in. However we did see nemo! The boat also sent a photographer with us and so we got photos of a lot of the things we saw.
The second site was Hastings Reef where the visibility was not as good but we saw Willy the Giant Maori Wrass who was about the size of me! We also saw Gill (from Finding Nemo!)
Today we visited the Cairns museum a tiny little place where a very enthusiastic Cliff showed us around and insisted on making us hold everything and told us lots of useful things. We saw an early aeroplane simulator used for training, spear throwing devices, how the train up to the table lands was built and that 14 people died making it!
We are now off to a Reef Teach presentation to learn about all the things we took photos of. Tomorrow we are taking the steam train up to the table lands for mel's dad who didnt get to go on a train in Venice!
Love from the country that builds swimming pool lagoons right next to the beach (You would think they dont appreciate what they have!)
