Mel and Stu missing you
Well Guatemala City was exhilarating if a little scary. What with the locals warning us it was a dangerous place to be, madmen talking to us in the park and the bus company scamming us for our trip back up north (well actually there was no scamming but we were charged much more for a "luxury" bus that differed from the one we got down here by giving us a free sandwich and given no option to accept it!
Anyway we spent the afternoon here. Even if the globalization is a bit saddening (it is an unfortunate truth that all the largest and nicest plots of land in the capital are owned by McDonalds) at least there was clean - and as importantly- free toilets dotted around. In this time we hit most of the landmarks and got to witness a "sexpert" and his rapidly growing crowd of onlookers dispensing wisdom in the plaza between the cathedral and capital buildings, very odd although we couldn't understand a word the sex toys at least gave us an idea what the subject was! We retired to the bus station as it darkened. Our bus got held up in a massive road crash leaving the capital, then we got pulled over by the police looking for a fugitive and needing to see everyones passports, although they did not ask for ours - reckoning we don't look Hispanic enough, the first time that has worked in our favour in this country where prices in bakeries are quadrupled at the sight of a white skin!
So we're now back in Flores for a very relaxed couple of days. This morning we wandered out to a local cave system to pretend to be explorers for a bit. Unfortunately this got a bit realistic when the electric generator gave up the ghost and the two us were left alone in the depths of a cave system with a rapidly dying flashlight. We managed to make it most of the way out before being found by a worker and shown the last bit of the way.
Spent the rest of the day catching up on precious TV time (Stu the last half hour of the united game - 5-1 !!) and Mel the First Wives Club). And there's a Matchbox 20 concert being shown tonight - woo!
Lots of love from the country where it hasn't stopped raining all afternoon,
Stu and Mel
Tomorrow we leave Guatemala sadly to do the bits in Belize we skipped on the way down. We have really enjoyed it here, its been a great place to start our trip!
