Amish Country
Spent another wonderful day with a terrific family whom we have known for 19 years and haven’t seen each other for 15 years and it seems that we can just pick up on the friendship where we left off. I was bridesmaid for Wade and Janelle’s wedding and Kelsie is their beautiful daughter. Anyway went to Friedens Lutheran Church this morning and it was like going back in time as this was a church where our team Captive Free played back in 1991.
After church we drove into Lancaster County which is where the Amish people live and have their farms. These are a peaceful people who have shied away from anything to do with modern culture. They drive around in horse and buggy, don’t use any machines or electricity or phones, even no zips or buttons – they use straight dressmaking pins. I just love seeing the horse and buggies drive down the street. We saw so many today. They are farmers mostly and do the farming by horse drawn machinery. The women do a lot of sewing and are known for their magnificent quilts – we stopped in a shop and just admired them looking at all the different designs and colours. They are also very expensive starting at around $800 and upwards …not in our budget! The kids just loved learning about a different life and culture.
Another busy day …. Head to Washington DC for the last leg of our journey …. Still so much to see and so little time. God Bless and we’ll see our Aussie friends soon.
Love Anne
