We got picked up on Wednesday 18th from Sam's bungalows at 7.30a.m. It was a bit annoying as we didn't really know what was happening; the minibus picked up other people on the way and then dumped us at a café for our included 'breakfast' (a baguette with jam). Other people joined us, totalling about 25. We then all got put on to tuk-tuks and our bags on to another and taken down to the bridge at Serendipity beach where our boat awaited.
As we sat on the boat waiting to leave, the Cambodian people were loading loads of other stuff on to be delivered to the islands: eggs, bottles of coke, beers and bamboo trees.
It was quite windy, and the boat rocked over the huge waves. After about 45 minutes, the boat stopped near Koh Tas. They got out some snorkelling gear and we had half an hour to explore. Max jumped from the top deck of the boat into the sea but Steph settled at jumping from the bottom deck.
Once in the depths of the sea, we swam nearer to shore so that we could stand. We put on our masks and had a hunt for fish. Soon enough, the boat horn went and we had to swim the distance back.
The waves got even larger as we headed towards the next stop, Koh Rong Samloem. We arrived in Saracen Bay of the island in one piece, with our backpacks and rucksacks. Although we knew it was a remote island, we were shocked at the little civilisation that we could see along the stretch of sandy beach. The island is simple beaches and jungle - no paths, no cars or motorbikes, no shops, no internet!
We had lunch in a little shack with the group (bbq'd fish and rice). We learnt that actually the island only has electricity from 6p.m. until early hours of the morning. Having booked no-where to stay (as there's no wifi, they don't have any accommodation available online), Max left Steph with the bags and went off along the beach in search of a bungalow for us.
He returned within half an hour having struck lucky - he'd found somewhere! We geared up with our backpacks on our back, rucksacks on our front and flip-flops in hand and Max led us to FanFan's bungalows.
FanFan's consists of a small bar/restaurant and three detached bungalows. They all face the bay with about 15 metres of white sand between them and the sea; we doubt we'll ever have such a view again.
The bungalow is made of bamboo with a thatched roof. It has a huge double bed, mosquito net, fan and basic ensuite. The best thing about it is the little balcony by the front door with a table and two chairs. We've already spent a few hours there reading and listening to the sea.
As it was so windy, we decided to go for a stroll to see what else we could find. We didn't dare enter the jungle behind so we stuck to the beach and walked for about 20 minutes before we saw another person.
Quite a distance along the beach we found another set of bungalows with a slightly bigger bar/restaurant that also had a pool table. So we decided to have a game of pool facing the sea - Max said pool up Copthorne Social Club will never be quite the same.
We continued around the bay until we reached the end. There's not a lot else! As we liked the place with the pool table (and due to lack of choice), we returned there later in the evening for dinner. It was an experience walking back in the pitch black to our bungalow - we had a torch but along the way there are streams leading into the sea and Steph still managed to fall over when jumping across one.
We bought two cans of Cambodia beer, played some cards, and retired to bed. It's quite nice being cut off from everything.
