Mostar - 22 September
I was due in Dubrovnik the next night to meet Matt so I was up early the next day to head to Mostar. I had been recommended the morning train and so I was at the station before 7am ready to jump on. It did not disappoint as we headed through stunning mountains and past lakes and small villages. I have caught a lot of trains on this trip but it was probably the best one so far! I arrived at Mostar at about 10 and headed straight into the centre of the town. It is quite a small place centred along the river, which was good as I only had a few hours before my bus to Dubrovnik! I had soon found the famous Stari Most (old bridge) that was destroyed during the war but later reconstructed. It really is a sight to see as it arches over the river. And it is crazy that people jump off it as at 21m it is extremely high! There was one guy ready to jump off while I was there but he wouldn't until he had enough money from the watching tourists and unfortunately no one was interested in paying him while I was there. It was soon time to head back to the station though and my time in Mostar was over. It really was a beautiful town though with cobbled streets and old stone buildings perched over the river gorge and with towering hills around.
My short visit to Bosnia had been extremely moving. I had found the countryside and the cities to both be extremely beautiful and had also learnt a lot about its sad past. It had also made me realise how little I know about the world we live in and just how fortunate I am to grow up in NZ where the worst we have to worry about is how awkward John Key is.
