Are plan for the day was to drive to the Grand
Canyon via the Hoover Dam and find a place to stay near there. We managed to
get to and drive over the Hoover Dam easy enough but the Grand Canyon was a
different story. We went to the West side of the Canyon where there is a glass
Sky Walk you can do over the side of the Canyon. Thirty miles before we got
there the road disappeared and turned into a rough dusty gravel road! Thinking
the sat nav must of taken us the wrong way we carried on and eventually reached
it. All there was, was a tent with a massive gift shop and information centre
inside. We asked where we could see the Canyon thinking it would be fairly
cheap, but they wanted $40+tax each just to get through the gate then an extra
$130+tax each to go on a tour THEN another $30+tax each to go on the bloody Sky
Walk! Needless to say we didn't bother and drove the 30 mile dust road back,
nearly breaking the car in the process. We were really in the middle of no
where and it was getting late. We had a look on the nav and it showed a little
town not far away where there was accommodation so we headed there. The place
looked a lot bigger on the the sat nav than it did in real life, all it was was
sand and gravel roads. We pulled up to this motel which looked like something
straight out of a horror film, went into the office to book a room and the guy
looked at us as if we were the first people from out of town he'd ever seen! I
tried to pay on my card but the bank had decided to lock the card (great
timing), luckily Mel had enough on her card. Once we got in the room it was
actually quite nice and when we went for some food in the motel restaurant the
owners were nice too. I had rang the bank and sorted my card out so we could
pay for the meal and its a good job as I spotted the guy's handgun just sat on
the shelf.
