Ok so after I'd taken a few too many trips to the toilet on Christmas day and Boxing day.. we spent another day or so in Luang Prabang recovering and visiting temples. I had to recover before the dreaded 11 hours of windey roads back to Vientiene! Somebody was sick in the first 10 minutes! which was then followed by about 5 others. Luckily we had some trusty anti-sickness tablets with us. Matt managed to sleep nearly the whole way. b******! It never turns out to be as bad as your dreading and we got a free noodle soup and cake out of it. Matt liked the cake so much he did a "sweep" of the bus for uneaten ones. Scav.
We stayed in Vientiene one night and then took a bus to Bangkok for New Years Eve. Can't say we were looking forward to this one either as it was 12 hours nightbus no beds. But as it turned out we lucked out and managed to get the best seats on the bus. The front two with an empty luggage racket for out feet. Score. The rest of the bus probably hated as, as we were probably the shortest two people on the bus. Ha. At the border we went through "narcotics check station" .. moral of the story if your drug smuggling leave them on the bus because they don't check there! Most pointless thing ever.
We arrived about 6am and wandered around Khao San Road area looking for somewhere to stay. Somehow we managed to end up in this crazy old ladys house (duped by the "clean rooms" sign).. as soon as we walked in she locked the door behind us and muttered something about danger. She then made us wait in her reception area which consisted of all the crap shes accumulated her entire life. She made us wait twenty minutes while she found the key to the room.. The key however remained elusive so she kicked us out with an "sorry I cant find" and swiftly locked the door behind us.
It was really cool to be in Bangkok. All very Christmassy. Who knew that all I needed to do to get Christmas carols was to go into Burger King. Blasting them out. Spent two days in a row wandering around Siam Square and going to the cinema (like the good old days Soph!) I love Bangkok cinemas, they're so much better than ours.. its like a whole department store of ice cream choices and japanese food. Strange going to the cinema with asians tho. For some reason they find death HILARIOUS and every time someone gets shot or something in a film the whole audience cracks up.
New Years Eve was pretty up there with one of the best either of us has ever had. We spent it on Khao San Road and the atmosphere was wicked. We got drunk in our room on Sangsom and Red Bull and then went and danced on the street with everyone else. It was completely rammed with Westerners and Thai people dancing. Very cool. After New Years we got another nightbus down to Krabi to meet Miss Dallyn who swiftly left us as soon as we arrived for her new boyfriend :) ha. I'll let her tell that story! We spent a day by a swimming pool relaxing in the sun as we've not seen any for so long. Damn cloud. Then we spent a couple of days in Ao Nang a beachside town. Oh yeah I forgot to mention.. I got ROBBED damn it. The tour bus company (whom one always HAS to trust with your bags) went through everyones in the luggage holdle while we all slept and took money and anything they could find really. I lost my back up debit and credit card which is not so bad as they were easy to cancel. Just annoying because theres nothing I could have done to stop that. If anyones in Bangkok soon dont travel with Lemon Tree bus company! or book anything at Surinthany (the one next to chada hostel)!
After Krabi we got a bus to Penang in Malaysia (today) which is 90% chinese.. and the food is truely the best. Better than China in fact.. partially because you can read the menu here. Will be spending a few days staying at my cousins in Kuala Lumpa (they have a pool YES) and then onto Bali. x
