Hey all, here comes another entry, but with a difference.......we're in Malaysia now! Woop woop!
Day 26: So as promised by the tour company, we did indeed have best part of 24 hours travelling ahead of us. But first we had to get our things together & relax for a little longer!!
Our last full day in Thailand was a wet one! It didnt stop raining all day, so we took our laundry to the laundrette surprisingly. 4kg's of the stuff. While we waited we wrote our blogs & fed our faces a bit. Then some more, then a little more. Nothing exciting happened, no coconut incidents or bug related scares.
Day 27: Today was crap! But we did cross the border to Malaysia finally. We had a 7.00am transfer to the ferry then after the crossing, we boarded the bus again & travelled to Haad Yai. Took about 5.5 hours. From there we were shown to another bus to travel to Penang in N. Malaysia. This took 4.5 hours. We got through customs with no problems which is always a joy. Once in Penang we had to hang about for 3 hours to get the VIP bus to Kuala Lumpur. We took a stroll around a shopping mall taking in the sights & a Big Mac! At 23.30 we boarded the bus & set off for a 6 hour trip south. Were asleep by 12.
Day 28: As we have come to realise with Asia, the chaos that is transportation is actually very well organized & in a timely manner. We arrived as promised at 5.30am at the KL bus station. No sooner had we stepped off the bus before a hostel tout had bombarded us with info on Le Village, which we decided to have a look at. Its the oldest in town, built 1914 & you can certainly tell. We love it, its so full of character & the staff are cool. Apparently its the 5th best place to stay in KL according to Globetrotter. Cant be bad at 5 quid a night. We got the first day free as well.
We met a few guys from Winchester who arrived shortly before us & they seem really sound, we had a quick introduction then all retired for a kip cos we were all shattered!!
We got up at 10 to check out the town. The first stop & probably the closest attraction was the KL Tower. We went up to the observation deck & the views were second to none. At 276m up, you can see a whole lot. The tower continues up to a massive 421m & is the 4th tallest in the world. Then we walked to the Twin Towers & did some shopping at the ridiculously glitzy mall inside as the skybridge was closed. Every designer had a shop here, Gucci, Louis Vuitton (this is matt by the way, I can only spell Primark & TK Maxx) & many others. Felt right at home obviously!!
We grabbed some lunch at a cool bar, had black tip reef sharks in a tank above the bar. Had fish & chips which was so so good. Next we went to see Dataran Merdeka where the Union Jack was taken down in 1957 & the Malaysian flag was raised to declare their independence. Known as Independence Square.
Next stop on the map was a huge area of gardens that including bird parks, butterfly sanctuaries, orchid gardens, deer parks & the awesome National Monument. It commemorates the lives of those lost in the 2 world wars & it is so worthy of that. It was so immensely detailed & huge, with a great hilltop setting for all to see.
I took one pic of Berg infront of it but only got the bottom two guys in it. Looks like a memorial for the first gay act in Malaysia!! Kind of ruined the whole glory of it all!!
We walked for hours looking for the Lake Gardens which are supposed to be stunning, but when we finally arrived there they were renovating & the lake was completely drained out. We were so annoyed.
Tired & disappointed by this we decided that food in Chinatown was all that could rebuild our spirits....& energy! It did, its as cheap here in the capital as it was in Thailand, just have to know where to look really.
We called it a day there.
Day 29: As most of you know Carly has a sleeping disorder, she gets far too much. She woke from the deepsleep only because I was shaking her at 10am! Didnt matter as we didnt have a massiv amount planned today. We went to the Twin Towers, Petronas Towers as they are known & got our tickets for the skybridge. Just a bridge that links the two towers at the 41st floor. Our booking was for 3 so we took a walk in the crippling heat to Bintang, another destination for the rich & famous. I bought some shorts in a discount factory outlet, the only cheap shop in the area it seemed & Carly purchased a new back pack as her old one gave up one of its zips! Think we were undercharged by about 50% cos it was a North Face one & the half size ones were marked up at more! Good work by us.
We went back to the Towers to walk over the bridge & it wasnt very exciting. It was like a military arrangement so it took far too long. The views were nothing compared to yesterdays cos its only 170m up & its at a lower altitude as well. Free of charge though so cant grumble. A taxi tried to get us to pay 10 times what we paid going from the hostel to the towers to go back. Such a joke so we walked & our legs are thoroughly battered now. Tomorrow we intend to see the Batu Caves & were gonna use public transport to get there! Check out the bravery!! Oh yeh, the roads are stupidly crazy here, just have to run & hope!
Hope everyone is well, check the pics. As you can see we are still loving it!! Love to everyone, miss you all. xxx
P.S our simcard which we were using in Thailand is no longer working and we won't be getting one for Malaysia as we will probs be here just over a week! If you urgently need to contact us we are staying at le village hostel in KL for the next 3 or 4 nights! We will let you know our number as soon as we get to Oz!
Day 30:
We woke up this morning to discover that neither of us could move our legs, we were completely knackered out from the last two days & decided we just needed a day to relax & rest our poorly muscles!!
We had a lie-in til 1! The went to KFC for a bite to eat before going to the busiest internet cafe the world has ever seen! Full of kids & all playing Halo. Was so loud.
When we eventually got back to the hostel we monged out with James, a guy from Oxford & a new arrival called Taj from Tasmania. Just listened to some tunes on the roof top & traded stories from our travels so far. We all went out for an Indian together, was really cool to meet someone whose been here before because he knew exactly where was good to eat, good sites & good shopping.
We bought a bottle of rum on the way back & watched some movies on James' laptop. Didn't sleep til 2am. Not the most productive day, but fun all the same!
Day 31:
For some reason both me & Carly felt really ill this morning although mine was to fade away fairly quickly, Berg was ill all day. We decided the night before that we would go visit the Batu Caves so we stuck with the plan. Caught the bus there with Taj & it was so worth it. Amazing site to see. On the bus back to KL Berg had a funny turn & we had to leap off the bus & sprint to a toilet!! I found it hilarious but worrying at the same time! Her colour & the fact that she was shaking told me she wasnt exaggerating. I'll just say she looked a hundred times better when she came out the loo. Was almost like a 'Stars in their Eyes' transformation!!!!
We taxi'd it back in the end & once again chilled out with James', Taj was checking out to go to Thailand. We watched the FA Cup Final in the hostel with a few others & played some cards. Another late night but enjoyable.
All our wishes go to Mum & Dad, Granddad, Kate, Swan, Sally & Rog & Julie & John. Hope you are all keeping well & looking after eachother. Love you all, Matt & Carly.xxx
RIP Nan. Love you xxxxx
