Mary's Travels
Today Madeline and I got up and were able to find the Stockholm city tour, yay! We walked and learned a lot on the tour and finally got to see Stockholm up close. We walked by almost all the H&M's, the Eurovision park, the place where the Nobel peace prize is handed out, the origin of Stockholm syndrome, and so so much more. It was really interesting! Afterwards we went back to our island to the royal palace to watch the changing of guards which was cool, then we hunted around for food. It was a long time coming but we finally stumbled upon a seafood place where I got local flounder, super yummy. Then we made our way over to a tram to go to Skansen, but first we ran into a Norwegian parade- it was their national holiday. We grabbed some treats at a local cafe to watch the phenomenon, then eventually joined in when things were officially starting up. We pretended to sing the Norwegian national anthem and walked a bit with the people. We decided we were just going to hop on the tram and get on with our day, so we did that. Luckily the tram ran right along the parade, so we still got to be part of it, but instead we got to ride in a car and wave at everybody passing... It was super cool I felt like the president. Eventually we got to Skansen, an "open air museum" that shows the traditional lifestyle of Sweden along with some native animals. Like Diana Rose Farmstead on steroids. It was huge!! And on an island right next to the heart of downtown! We got to see an old schoolhouse, an old mansion, plenty of farmers' homes, etc etc. It was really really neat. We eventually ran back into the parade- they were headed for the amphitheater in Skansen. We listened to them for a while, then continued on our visit. We went and saw the animals- even a bison! We also saw a seal, some elk, and some reindeer! It was really fun. Afterwards we got on a ferry back to our island and went back to our hostel to clean up before dinner. We were going to the ice bar that night, so we decided to eat somewhere near there. We had learned on our tour that Sweden has its "own" McDonald's, and it's actually more popular than McDonald's itself. It's called Max, and it ended up being really good. They even had ice! Not that we didn't have a lot of ice in store for us, but it was a nice surprise. Then we headed to the ice bar. We got suited up and went on in, expecting a very touristy scene, and we were not disappointed. It was hilarious. They didn't even bother to write anything in Swedish. It was fun though, and Madeline and I decided to turn it into a dance club, which was extra fun in the massive capes. A Malaysian couple were the only ones to get on our level, and when they left we decided it was probably time to go. We were only supposed to be there for 45 minutes, but it was coming on an hour and a half so we didn't want to risk getting charged extra. Plus we had to get up in four hours. So we left, feeling super accomplished with our entire trip. We enjoyed the last sliver of sunlight at 11:30pm, then woke up early to get to the airport and caught the sunrise at 3am. I love Sweden.
