Mary's Travels
Madeline and I took a relaxing day today after our quick jump from finals week into intense traveling. This bed that I'm sleeping in is incredible. I'd compare it to my bed in France the first day I got it (now it's kinda flat). We slept so well and so late, but we enjoyed a shower and time and space to get ready for the day. We tried to hit up a walking tour that started at 1pm on the island next door, but due to construction we couldn't find it :( Instead we explored our own island and found a lunch spot. This cafe we found was awesome. It had been open for just two weeks, and all the furniture was from IKEA. A meal was about $12, and I had a soup, sandwich, salad, water, and their special tea. Coffee was also included. And this is in old town Stockholm. Really great find. After lunch we tried a walking tour we found online, just self-guided. We followed it for about halfway, then got distracted haha. We drank water out of a fountain and saw the parliament building, that's really all that stuck out to me haha. We also saw the narrowest alley in Stockholm and grabbed some ice cream :) I got a yellow and blue one, for Sweden, and it was good, but then I needed to go back to the hostel haha. It gave us a good break though, and we did some shopping until it was time to go to Sofia's house for dinner- Sofia is Gun-Britt and Stefan's daughter. Sofia lives with her partner Fredrik and their adorable son Albin. We had a great time with them! Sofia and Fredrik were so kind and fun, and Albin was very entertaining :) We first set out to the highest natural point in Stockholm, giving us a great view of the city we really have yet to see haha. After taking in all the views, we headed back to their apartment for dinner. Fredrik prepared an incredible meal, definitely one of the best if not the best I've had all my time in Europe. We had a Danish appetizer (it was so good it could've been the meal). It was shrimp and onion and everything good. Wow it was amazing. Then we had moose and potatoes and lingonberry. Doesn't get much more Swedish than that haha. It was incredible. We had great conversation- both Sofia and Fredrik were very fun and interesting to talk with, we learned a lot from them. Sofia is actually a city planner in Stockholm (with an undergrad in Civil) so I was freaking out over that. Albin was great dinner entertainment haha and it was nice to have a meal with a little kid again :) made me miss my niece and nephew a little extra. For dessert we had rhubarb pie, and oh my was it amazing. Fredrik made a special vanilla cream sauce and it was perfect. YUM. We definitely won't get another meal like that again in our lives. After dinner we hung out in the living room with Albin until bed time. We had such a blast with Sofia and her family, I have been very impressed with my relatives over here, definitely glad to be related :) When we got back to our hostel, we chilled for a bit then I talked to a Canadian civil engineer for a bit... Never this entire semester have I talked about civil so much in one day. It just reminds me how much I love and miss it. Ahhh I can't wait to get back home to it. Although truly if I were to work anywhere besides America, Sweden is very quickly becoming number one :)
