Mary's Travels
After having some troubles with my doorknob and being locked in my room (luv u france), I was able to pack up in time to meet my friend Madeline at 2:30am to walk over to the bus station to catch a flight at 6:30am. A huge crowd of drunk men were also headed to the airport, so that added some fun and extreme amounts of noise to the ride. Either way I slept almost the whole time. The security at Charleroi was tight, our passports were checked five times, including even before entering the building, leaving long lines of people outside. Remind me to never flight out of Brussels (or Belgium for that matter) ever again. Wow that was tough. But luckily we had enough time and made our flight, trying to catch some sleep on the way but not being very successful. What little time we got under clouds was GORGEOUS. WOW. We landed and caught a bus towards the city, getting to see the countryside and also the suburbs, all exactly how you would picture Norway- innovative yet classic and colorful. Not a single house was built without thought or care. Super cute. We got to the city and locked up our baggage for the day- we were headed to Stockholm at 11pm that night so we didn't want to carry our stuff all day. We first started out on the main road in Oslo with tons of expensive shops- it was gorgeous! So much beautiful classical and modern architecture and a million flowers of ever color! The royal palace ends the road, and even though it's nothing crazy amazing (it was built during a rough economic time) you could get as close as you wanted and the surroundings were gorgeous. Then we headed towards Aker Brygge which is a port area. There we found the Nobel Peace Center, tons of ships of every type, luxurious modern apartments, and great views of the archipelago. It was a super super nice area, and filled with hip restaurants and food trucks and really talented performers. After wandering around there for a while we went to the Akershus Fortress. This was super cool to walk around- as usual there were flowers all over and every view was spectacular. Oslo is such a cool city- an amazing mix of old and new along with nature wow. I didn't expect it to be this cool. After doing our tourist tour, we hopped on a metro and rode it to the end, leading us up a mountain with amazing views of the city and the archipelago. We ate at a lodge-like restaurant with amazing food!! I got a salmon and egg sandwich (which was not a sandwich at all, way more fancy!) and Madeline got a reindeer sandwich, again extremely fancy. We devoured our food it was so good! Afterwards, we walked down the hill for a bit (as it started to snow!) to the Holmenkollen ski jump- a MASSIVE Olympic-approved jump. I've never snow-skied in my life, let alone see a ski jump. You'd really think they'd have more horizontal displacement but no the structure really looks like a steep slide, it's scary. We walked up half of it, unfortunately we didn't get to zip line down but it was fun to watch people do it. Wow it was really really impressive. You can see it from anywhere in the city and the archipelago, even though it on the outskirts of town. It is an impressive structure to say the least. It'd be super cool to see an event there. Afterwards we took the metro back down the mountain and hopped on a ferry (included in our 24-hour transport card ~$10). We were gonna get off and explore an island, but we were so pooped by this point we just decided to ride it around the area. There were some really cool views, and nothing less than the absolute cutest houses. I also really enjoyed all the cute little blonde Norwegian babies on board :) It's so nice to be with my people (lol). No everyone here is the blonde I dream of being and also about twice my size. Kinda close though. It started raining so we were kinda discouraged along with being so pooped from the day and the lack of sleep. But before we knew it the weather let up and we decided to check out the opera house before heading back to the bus station. It was so cool. All marble, and you could walk up the roof and get incredible views (oh btw it's right on the water). Even though it had just been raining and it wasn't a sunny sunny day, there were tons of people there just chillen on their Saturday. Really cool. We went back to the bus station and walked all over looking for food, then took a long break, then went and got food finally. We had wine (to help us sleep on the bus) and I got fancy chocolates. Ya I liked Oslo.
