The sky is a bit cloudy with a few drops of rain in the air, but it is getting warmer through the morning. We don't have far to go so it's 11:30 when we pack up and leave.
We stop in Aldi in Alcantarhia and then at a fuel station to top up the LPG, before driving along main roads which are much quieter as it is Saturday. There are the usual orange stalls in many lay-bys and the fields are full of blossom. We also see a number of storks in nests.
We reach the stop-over point in on a sand and grass spit on the edge of Ferragudo, on the opposite side of the river to Portomao. Nearby there is an old brick industrial chimney with a stork's nest and we watch him hover and drift before clumsily landing in the huge clump of twigs.
After lunch we wander into the old town along its cobbled streets. There is a fishing harbour lined with restaurants, each with an outdoor kitchen area for cooking fish straight off the boats. In the harbour small netters bob up and down, their gunwales and outboards lined with cormorants basking in the sun.
Steep back streets lead up between tiled houses to the church looking over the river. Also in one of these narrow streets is a theatre the an ornate tiled facade and large wooden doors. A bric-a-brac shop has a few old tiles and groups making patterns on display but the owner wants €7 to €10 for each tile, which seems a bit much.
We return to the square and sit in the sun with a drink at a bar before returning to the vans. The wind is quite cool and we are glad to be inside as the sun disappears behind Portomao's tower blocks.
