Its said that Newfoundland experiences four seasons in one day. And its true. Its a cloudless morning when i pack up and head out towards the Western Brook Pond. By the time im in the carpark to the fjord its become overcast and drizzling. A guy in a camper offers me a place to sit to wait for it to clear but i pass it off and put on a jacket. less than a minute later the skies open and i take him up on the offer. Jim has retired and is touring around the USA and Canada.
Half an hour later the rain has passed and I hike out to the fjord. Arriving at the trail end and the small dock i meet Pierre who i had previously met in Trinity a couple of days before. He is traveling around the maritimes on a Harley.
In the time it takes to hike to the fjord and back a storm has rolled in soaked both Pierre and I, and disappear. I continue my ride north in wet jeans until i break for lunch in a little road side diner to dry off. Its a small town and the owner/operator and her mum are interested to meet an Australian and sit with me over lunch to chat about alien animals like kangaroos and koalas.
I hit the Viking Trail by mid afternoon and make my way up the western coast of Newfoundland towards St Anthony and L'Anse aux Meadows. At the end of the trail and the northern tip of the island i find a great little camping spot by an inlet across from a small fishing village.
