I'm up early and get a day pass for the national park. I hike for 7 hours making the return trip to the summit of gros morne mountain spotting a couple of moose on the way and getting up close to one blocking the trail on the way back.
Later that evening i ride to the Tablelands in the southern portion of the park. Luck is on my side as i get overtaken by a car as a cop comes around the corner (we are both speeding). He ignores me and chases down the car in front. The Tablelands is one of only two places in the world where the earths mantel has broken though the crust. The peridotite rock results in a mars like landscape in stark contrast to the surrounding forests. A great free gps-video/audio tour explains the formation.
That night i realize ive made the mistake of buying a can of soup that requires a can opener, which i dont have. There are a couple of grey nomads camping over the way and i interrupt their dinner to ask for an opener. Gail and Carl insist that i join them for dinner, and a beer and that if I make it back to St Johns Gail I stay with them.
