29th June - 17th July Our beautiful Island
Cycling Lands End - John O Groats,
We were hoping the current weather was going to improve, however it never did. We took the train from Reading to Penzance, then cycled to our start point the sign post of Lands End after the statoury photo we headed off for a first night camping as we arrived onto the site. We realised it didnt have a shop and the local shop was back 5 miles it was still raining it was 18:00 in the evening I'm not going back. The lady on the site gave us a tin of beans once she heard of our predicament.. Now this is not a good start!!!
Up early and hungry we are off heading towards Falmouth before going north to Boscatle. We obviously couldnt ride through the village so we diverted West. Man those hills in Cornwall are monsters and have no Respite its always up and up some more.. fully loaded with camping kit we slogged our through beautiful villages high hedgerows. We once stopped at an unmarked Junction not sure of which way to go.. I have a plan I take my water bottles and knock on the door of a local house. MAN Stephen King would have been frightened the door opened a jar, dogs snarling I timidly ask for water then this hand appears and takes the bottles hopefully they will return ah lucky for me they did. Asking very quickly for directions before the door slams shut mmh Thankyou.!!!
We are now heading into Devon and clocked up our first hundred miles.
WE met some lovely people lots who gave us donations for our local hospice, We pitched our tent in a pub Garden at the owners permission of course. In Bridgewater we were given a Full English breakfast in a roadside cafe to help us along. One lady gave mark her lottery money for our charity.. And lots of campsites gave us a reduced price. We met many other cyclist completing this trip in their own way and time. I think apart for the experience of seeing our beautiful Island. The whole trip was made special by the people we met along the way..
We completed our journey in 18 days only four of them did we feel the sun on our backs. we completed 1032 miles and I cant wait to do it again next year......
