We got up and packed our bags and loaded the car ready to head to Cape Tribulation. We had a mooch around Port Douglas first as we hadn’t had chance during the day. There are lots of boutiques and small restaurants, quite posh and an Australian breakfast show host once renewed her wedding vows here so it just shows it’s nice!
Cape Tribulation is about 90 mins from Port Douglas, on the other side of the Daintree River. We stopped this side of the crossing and took a 1hour river tour looking for crocodiles! We managed to see 4 young ones, the huge ones would have been deep beneath the water as they like to stay cool, so we were close to them!! The young ones were surprisingly small! They could have easily fitted in your hand, although in about 10 years time, they would be eating your hand as they will be huge! They gave us a free year pass so we may return on our way back to Port Douglas on Monday, in the hope of seeing some big ones! We also saw a tiny bat and a snake!
We crossed the river on the ferry (which looked nothing like a ferry but more like a moving slab of concrete taking you across the river!) and drove through The Daintree National Park to Cape Tribulation. It is one of the oldest Rainforests and the closest to the Great Barrier Reef and there were some amazing views along the way. We stopped at one look out (Alexandra Bay) which you can see in the pics, and it was beautiful! There are lots of natural beaches along the way and the sea is so crystal clear.
We checked into our hostel, had a quick snooze, and then headed for the beach. Unfortunately, there were warnings about crocs in the water and we didn’t fancy our chances so didn’t stick around for long! Wherever you go there’s either crocs, marine stingers or sharks stopping you from going in the water! While out we managed to book ourselves on another barrier reef tour so we are heading out again for the day tomorrow to mingle with the fish!
We have since just chilled, avoided the mozzies, stood on a shelled bug, chatted with our German and French room mates and watched the geckos!
