We slept very well in our cosy beds! We had two lovely room mates from Norway! One of them kept us amused, she was doing exercises in the room and kept calling it sport which along with her mannerisms, we found rather amusing!!
We both thought that Canberra 'city' (if you can really call it a city) was fairly compact and that we would be able to walk around with ease and in no time at all, how wrong were we?!! We walked to Parliament house which was on the other side of the lake to our hostel. It didn't take long, and we enjoyed the pristine views along the way. It was very quiet everywhere, we just assumed it was because it was Sunday! We were able to go inside Parliament house and have a look around, including in the House of Representatives and the Senate! It was a huge building and a very well kept one. In the week when Parliament are in you can't see as much as we did. The building is perfectly symmetrical, and is in perfect proportion all the way to the war memorial on the other side of the lake, about 2 miles away! From Parliament house we walked down towards the lake past Old Parliament house which reminded us of the Whitehouse! We saw the art gallery, the high court and collection of flags along the river. We walked along the river admiring the views and watching the Captain Cook water jet memorial in the lake.
We went back to the hostel for lunch, had a snooze and then walked over to the war memorial. There was a museum but it was shut so we looked around the gardens at the different memorials and walked down Anzac Parade to the lake, passing yet more memorials! We had a mooch through town which was still very quiet! Over here they tend to shut shops early on Saturdays and Sundays, but these seem to be shut all the time! Hmmm! We are hoping to see more activity tomorrow, Monday!
