First stop on our journey southwards towards Rotorua was at the Kauri museum in Matakahoe. Considering that we had only seen Kauri trees for the first time last night, we had a lot to learn! The museum was very well done and had lots of different areas to walk through. There was a large display of Kauri Gum, which looks like amber, and was carved into all sorts of amazing things by the 'gum diggers'. Some of the lumps of gum they found whilst digging weighed over 40 kgs! Some of the pieces had insects trapped inside (very Jurassic Park) and one had a perfectly preserved 1,000 year old flea! We headed back through Aukland and a very affluent town called Cambridge (racehorse breeding country). Stopped at a supermarket there to pick up supplies and took up 4 spaces in the car park with our big Beast. Arrived at our campsite just south of Rotorua, right beside The Blue Lake, and relieved to say nothing smells like rotten eggs yet.......
