From the ferry, we drove through wonderful, sheltered, fertile valleys, lit up in the evening sunshine, with beautifully grown vineyards and orchards stretching off in every direction. On the horizon, in every direction, gently sloping hills, and then.....mountains! Yes, more windy roads to climb in our trusty Beast! By the time we reached our campsite, at Richmond, near Nelson, it was quite late, so we decided to go out for a meal for a change. Driving along we had noticed that the place-names in South Island seem much more anglicised than in North Island, so thought we would encounter few linguistic problems. We thought we had done pretty well, as had got to grips with the fact that a Dairy is a corner shop, not a place for milk processing, that if you want to buy sweets you ask for 'lollies', and that place names beginning with Wh.. are pronounced like an F. However, when we asked for two beers to go with our meal, we were completely flummoxed when the waitress asked us if we wanted "12's" or "handles"(!) Luckily 'handles' proved to be the correct decision.
