So driving to Philadelphia has to be the worst drive so far! I set off at a good pace from Boston, the directions said it should take me about 5 or 6 hours and I decided to go the direct route as it was a bit of a longer drive. I was doing well, the scenery was nice, didn't know where I was half the time and only knew what state's I was in or going through by the registration plates. My registration gets me some funny looks, even if I was Canadian, I'm a long way from home!!
So this drive started off well but I was north of New York and the traffic started!! All in all, I was in traffic jams for over 2 hours!! So now it's getting dark and I still have a long way to go! I still haven't got used to all the crazy junctions here in the US and I prefer to drive in the day so I can see where I need to turn, there has been many times that I can't see the junction properly and have pulled out in front of cars or missed the turning all together! My driving here with no idea where idea I'm going would scare most people I think!!!
However I always seem to make it and I did this time! Was staying in a lovely Georgian Mansion that is in the heart of Farmount park. I was in a 16 female dorm but it was spacious and homely. Huge front rooms to chill in with loads of room to cook in as well!!
The weather has really been getting better the further south I've been heading. So the next day with the sun blazing I decide to walk into the city, which is about 4 miles away. Along the way I stumble across the Philadelphia marathon which is being run from the centre and through the park, I stayed to clap them on and followed the route into the city.
So I went to Independence Hall where the declaration of independence was written and signed and also were part of the film, National Treasure with Nicolas Cage, was based, ha ha!! The tour ranger told us we were not to ask any questions about the film as they must get it so much! Saw the liberty bell and so much more, walked for hours as was such a lovely day! So many old buildings and Philadelphia is such a lovely city, wish I had booked to stay longer than just the 2 nights but I had already made reservations in a hostel in Washington so had to move on.
Oh, and I did the Rocky steps, the ones he runs up in the movie, took photos so I'll label them so!
Walked over 10 miles in total that day, easily! Got back to the hostel and chilled out in the big common rooms with some of the other people there, the hostel manager has also taken a bit of a shine to me and gave me a fortune cookie with a fortune he had written about me falling in love with the hostel staff, I promptly went to bed after that.
Was a shame to leave so soon as could of easily of stayed there another night at least but I suppose I was best to keep moving on as time is flying and I am still nowhere near Miami for my flight in December!!
Next stop, Washington DC
